Dodgeball is loved by children across the nation. I know this because I’m one of them. Our class always wines to play it and we get to on Fridays as our reward for making it through the week. If we get rid of dodgeball we have to replace it with something. Tag is not an option as it’s also banned in many schools for being to rough. According to The Weak Shall Inherit The Gym- Not only tag but even musical chairs and duck goose has been banned for being unfair. Those games have been added to the Physical Education Hall Of Shame. The things that replace dodgeball is even worse. There is jump rope without a rope so you can never fail! Also there is swedish baseball where you get free passage to a base and get a 2 minute massage.These new P.E games aren’t fun they’re torture. Although it may be inviting to get rough there should be a adult making sure that too much aggression isn’t let out. If there is person getting bullied the game should be stopped and the problem addressed. You can’t get aggression out on an obstacle course. It’s fun throw a ball around. You’re told always to be still and don’t throw or touch anything but in dodgeball your able to do it. This whole argument is countered if you have a P E teacher who doesn’t pay attention. There are approximately 400,000 individuals in the Unites States in this day and age that participate in high school cheerleading (www.varsity.com). If you ask, most of them would tell you that they work their butts off, and they would say that cheerleading is a sport. In some cases some cheerleaders are fighting for their right to be called athletes because their school districts tell them that they aren’t. By doing this the school districts are portraying the message that cheerleading is a joke, and that it isn’t a real sport. In my 8 or so years of playing football I’ve often heard coaches liken the job of the linemen to that of a soldier fighting in a trench, pushing, attacking, and struggling for every inch of the battlefield that is the line of scrimmage. Of course, the job of a lineman is far less dramatic and glorious than that description makes it out to be, most of our job is just keeping the defense at bay so the quarterback and the rest of the backfield has time to get a play off. Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. In a perfect world the athletes we look up to would be law abiding great citizens. Supporters of the current standards cite that student-athletes must meet the same minimum GPA as traditional students. Although the GPA requirements differ depending on the institution, the students must make progress toward graduating based on a schedule established by the NCAA. Violating the rules can result in ineligibility. Bill Hawkins, a professor at University of Georgia, points out that student-athletes must also adhere to the same admission standards as other students, despite many athletes coming from poorly funded public schools. Hawkins also argues that student-athletes are devoting 50 to 70 hours a week to sports and cannot handle a full-time academic course load during the sports season. The NCAA points out that graduation rates for all student-athletes are rising. Graduation rates among women student-athletes are around 80 percent for many sports and exceeds the rate for women students overall.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
