Profit Over Puppies Each year 2 million dogs are breeded by puppy mills and over 1.2 millions dogs every year are put down. There can be no argument that these numbers do not relate. Puppy mills are places that breed dogs for profit. In a lot of these mills dogs are kept in metal cages for 24 hours and do not not get any medical attention. These puppy mills are about profit and anything that cuts into there profit margins they neglect (dog food, veterinary services, protection from heat or cold). Some may argue that there are responsible breeders that care for their breeded puppies, however these breeders still contribute of the the endless cycle of dogs not having home and either being on the street or in a crowded shelter. As touched on above puppy mills are terrible places. Still including all the bad aspects, they does not socialize dogs. Some dogs are kept in a cage for most of the day, only let out for various reasons. In the article “a closer look at puppy mills”, written by the aspca it states “Fearful behavior and lack of socialization with humans and other animals are typical of puppy mill dogs. Puppies born in puppy mills are typically removed from their littermates and mothers at just six weeks of age. The first months of a puppy's life are a critical socialization period for puppies. Spending that time with their mother and littermates helps prevent puppies from developing problems like extreme shyness, aggression, fear and anxiety”. Puppy mills clearly do not care about there dogs well being. As long as they get there money, there could care less about the dog. This is not only animal abuse, but it creates more problems. People buying these dogs most likely don’t know they are buying from a sketchy place and that their dog could have aggression, extreme shyness, and anxiety. Since a lot of people will not have the time nor money to correct these problems they will give the dog to an already filled shelter or worse just let it go into the streets.
