Odds, every citizen of every developed nation has used the internet has least once in their lifetime. How the internet is used varies by individual and there is no truly right nor wrong way of using it. Some use it only for the basics or the essentials (like email, the news, or academic work, for example), some use it as a hub of social interaction with outlets such as Facebook and Twitter, and a few even use it for matters of questionable legality. There are also people who “live” within the internet, full fulling many non-essential but still important needs online. By “live,” I am not talking about people who never leave their homes and surf the internet all day long (more on this later) but rather fully functional members of society who thrive socially within the internet instead of face-to-face in the outside world. A significant catalyst for these people is Reddit, one of the largest internet forums in the world. In this study, the focus will be on the community and interactions of Reddit users.
The Methods
Researching the community of Reddit proved to be surprisingly and disappointingly challenging. The community itself is abysmally easy to access, as anyone with any form of PC/tablet/smart phone and a basic internet connection can do so, but to actually get any information from specific members of the community was problematic. A major issue stems from the “casual” nature of Reddit itself; the site is not well-suited for professional inquiries. Reddit does have a system for sending private messages (hereby referred to as a “PM” for short) between members but this system does not work like, for example, email. As PMs are intended only for short messa...

...s is the fact that their audience, the young and tech-savvy Gen Y demographic that Reddit aims for, serves as an excellent case-study of Reddit users as a whole. Additionally, recent surveys put out by the group’s leaders reveal a great deal of information about their audience, which helps increase understanding as to how the audience interacts with themselves as well as higher authority figures.
Speaking of authority figures, one construct lacking within Reddit is a clear hierarchical social structure. Yes, there are mods who act as the “police force” of a subreddit but within the audience, there is little social stratification. Some structure is formed by users who repeatedly post within the subreddit and whose name is remembered but this is the exception, not the rule. What this creates is a more open environment where any user, regardless of experience, can
““Well, they had a point. You are fat and disgusting!” The therapist announced. Patricia was sobbing, eyes red and nose runny...“Come on… Let’s go. We aren’t putting up with that!” her father...opened the door and ushered the family through. The therapist just observed and no more was heard from him…[Her nervous breakdown] was a result of long term bullying leading to an episode of being run out of school by a gang of boys. They threatened to kill her with a crowbar, sticks and wooden planks. She felt like a hunted fox” (shazwellyn.hubpages.com). No matter how hard a parent might try to help their child, whether they’re being bullied or are the bully, the consequences should not fall on the people who raise them because the victims have to do what they can to make up for what they’ve done or what they’ve suffered. The city of Monona, Wisconsin has proposed a new law that tickets and fines the parents for failing to respond properly to their child’s poor behavior. A behavioral and personal change consulting specialist, Mr. Michael Harmann, hypothesized that bullying behavior is typically an effort to cover up the bully's own vulnerability. It's a primitive mindset that wants to make you pay when you show vulnerability and since bullying mostly occurs under the legal age, that’s enough to say that higher levels of authority don’t have control over the thoughts and actions that bullies use as an outlet for their own pain because it goes against the Constitution. The key to helping the children we feel so sorry for is to heal the bully before he turns into a monster and the only way to help the perpetrator is to make him face his motivation to bully. “If you think about it, a great strategy to avoid being rejected is to reject everyon...
The epic poem, Beowulf, a work of fiction, offers more insight into Ancient Anglo-Saxon English culture than the work of Bede, who wrote, A History of the English Church and People. The epic poem Beowulf gives an enhanced illustration and clearer understanding of the culture of the Ancient Anglo-Saxon’s. The epic poem gives the audience a picture of what the Ancient Anglo-Saxon English valued; seafaring, warriors, heroes, and paganism.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
Every person has wondered about something - whether it be a person, place, thing, law, or anything that someone can think about. They ask questions both rhetorical and actual to themselves, and usually make it a mission to answer these questions. Some of the biggest questions have something to do with culture and religion. One of the most major questions of all time - to what extent does an individual have control over the outcome of his or her life? There are many different opinions on this topic.
Cycling has a multitude of benefits, more than getting from one place to another. Cycling improves your cardiovascular system, nervous system, muscular structure, and helps to build your core strength, just name a few. However, once kids reach junior high and high school cycling as a whole starts to wane or becomes a distant memory. NICA, National Interscholastic Cycling Association has recognized this issue and has taken actions to get kids off the electronics and back outside where they are socializing face to face with others and getting back into the habit exercising. The military, seeing the results of NICA’s actions has decided to aid NICA to help not only those in the Armed Forces, but their families as well through the MWR, Moral
Running is the one of the most traditional forms of exercises. Now days, when you have all the information about every possible topic within just a click away, it’s highly doubtful that you are unaware of all the magical benefits of running. But if you just need a little remainder that may be its time to start running to get rid all those extra kilos you have put on, here is a refresher –
The web has spurred communities exclusive to nerds. "News for nerds. Stuff that matters," reads the slogan of popular blog Slashdot. This blog, which receives 5.5 million visits a month, reports on “Linux, Technology, Games, Apple, and Science”. Voted on Yahoo in 2001 as the “Best Geek Hangout,” it has truly created a community for nerds to discuss their interests. As a result, the site sees active participation from its readers who discuss with others around the world with similar interests. These virtual conversations provide an outlet for visitors to express interests that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to. Unlike other popular blogs, Slashdot publishes user submitted content alongside editor created. Because the minimum threshold of knowledge needed to contribute to the d...
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
People often times single me out for being a christian. They just love asking me about touchy subjects to see my response. And this is because, unfortunately, there are so many christians who have this idea that the whole world needs to see things the same way they do. You see so much hate coming out of a religion that claims to preach peace and love. Christians see it as protecting the bible but it just comes across as ignorant. I am not saying I don’t share in the opinions of many christians, but more than anything I am saying that christians need to learn that not everyone in the world is going to see it the same way they will. When it comes to sin, same sex marriage, and living a holy life there are more than one opinion on what is right. So, you can’t justify all of the hate-acts in the name of your religion. Instead use all that energy you waste on hate to love and help those around you, despite whether you think they are “right or wrong”. I believe that that’s what God is more concerned about.
Social media is a revolutionary way to connect to friends and family through a single app much like Facebook. Also allowing the public to be more informed on current events whether that would be an issue in today 's society all the way to a heartwarming story or a funny video. Although this sounds amazing and the fact that this type of news outlet is practically new. An issue arises that involves “fake news” and with that comes many opinions on what to do about it. I believe that people browsing these platforms should have a little bit of skepticism behind each story and if it the topic truly intrigues someone then they should look into the topic on a reliable resource before passing on the authors misinformation.
Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between.
The Internet began in 1969 as a project “ARPANET” funded by the U.S. Government, since then the use of the Internet has exploded. The number of users who use the Internet has rapidly grown from 738 million in 2000 to 3.2 billion users according to a new report from the International Telecommunication Union. The Internet is constantly expanding and evolving and the use of government regulation on the internet has become a big issue. Censorship of the Internet has be suggested to prevent many things such as pornography, hateful speech, and instructions to make bombs. Censorship of this content has be justified to lead to the greater good, even if consumers are limited to the information they can find or put on the internet. The internet it a

Today social media has become a big influence on society. There are many different social media sites that allow people to interact with others. Such social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There are many more different sites, but these are the popular networks that are being used today. These sites allow you to connect with anybody you want to. Social media sites can make you feel connected with others and seem like the best thing, but at the same time it can be a weakness that many of us have.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
