Are Sweatshops Good or Bad in General? The term “sweatshop” originated during the period of the industrial revolution, precisely in England. During this period, England experienced industrial growth in their factories at home and abroad, as such women and children worked under harsh conditions with little or no pay. In our society of today, particularly in the United States, large demand of consumer products has given rise to sweatshops. Merriam-Webster defined it as “a place where people work long hours for low pay in poor conditions”. According to the United States Department of Labor, “sweatshop” is a factory that violates two or more labor laws. The question is what do people think about sweatshop, are they good or bad? Statistics has shown that sweatshop are run by large companies like Nike, Adidas, or Apple’s , who allows workers to work for long period without resting period, under low wages, unhealthy environment, and …show more content…

This could be seen from “Workers online report” by Mark Morey, on Nike’s sweatshops in Indonesia, which “uses aggressive and threatening behavior towards union activists.” Whereas in some other places like China activists in sweatshop are killed or imprison by their employers. While some employers go ahead to bribe government officials to keep quiet on their mal-practices. The “ABC news” also showed the apple magical factory in China, where suicide net has been built around the apartments of their workers. Due to the fact that, they are bored and tired of doing the same thing every day, and knowing that they have no choice, most commit suicide. The most amazing thing about sweatshops is that, the workers cannot even afford what they themselves produce.
