Staying Determined People ask, ”What drives us to undertake a mission?”. So, what does drive us to undertake a mission? Well, after reading the texts Barrio Boy, and Apollo 13 I think the answer is determination. Both Ernesto and the Apollo 13 astronauts used determination to undertake their missions. Ernesto was determined to fit in at a new school in a new country, while still remembering who he really is. Just take a look at the last sentence in the text which states “It was easy for me to feel that becoming a proud American, as she said we would, did not mean feeling ashamed of being a Mexican.” That sentence explains that Ernesto wanted to remember his origins in Mexico. Another sentence that supports my thesis is paragraph 17 sentence 1 which states “At Lincoln, making us into Americans did not mean scrubbing away what originally made us foreign.” This sentence explains why Ernesto is determined to remember who he really is. These astronauts were up in space 55 hours ad 46 minutes away from Earth when their oxygen tanks blew up. “The astronauts from Apollo 13 were determined to get home safely”. This thesis statement can be proved all throughout paragraph 3 which says,”Nine minutes later, Oxygen tank No. 2 blew up, causing No. 1 tank also to fail. “The Apollo 13 command module’s normal supply of electricity, light, and water was lost, and they were about 200,000 miles away from Earth”. This seems like a pretty dire situation to me which proves my thesis that says the astronauts were determined to get home safely. The astronauts did not give up, and they were intelligent and determined to get home safely. These astronauts survived in that spaceship without much oxygen, electricity, of water because they stayed
