The Diary of Anne Frank is the diary of a young girl during one of the bleakest time periods ever to take place in world history. Addressed to her diary, her dearest friend during her grim time in the annex of her father’s office, each passage was written with various displays of hope, resilience, and faith in Anne’s written thoughts and documented actions throughout the three years she spent living in fear and misery amongst other Jews hiding away during World War 2.

She states that someone “who has courage and faith will never die in misery” (Frank, 2007: 211) and follows the statement as she exhibits in later passages. Anne is a devout Jewish girl and thanks God for the gifts of love, joy (Frank, 2007: 211, paragraph 2) and protection (Frank, 2007: 260, paragraph 5) and, as seen in the previous quote, admits to still believing that people are “truly good at heart”. In this passage, Anne announces her faith in God and her faith in the Jewish community on the 11th of April 1944:

We must put our feelings aside, we must be brave and strong, bear discomfort without complaint, do whatever is in our power and trust in God. The time will come when we’ll be people again and not just Jews! […] It’s God who made us the way we are, but it’s also God who will lift us up again. […]
Be brave! Let us remember our duty and perform it without complaint. There will be a way out. God has never deserted our people. Throughout the ages Jews have had to suffer, through the ages they’ve gone on living, and the centuries of suffering have only made them stronger. The weak shall fall and the strong shall survive and not be defeated! (Frank, 2007: 261 - 262).
