Recommended: Introduction to family stress

Stresses within a family When people think of a family having a lot of tension it is to be assumed that there has been a dispute between family members. It is usually originating from an internal source within the household, and far less likely to be caused by the world’s involvement. But when one of the women within Anja’s family had to make the call to kill the children and herself we watch what real stress within a family can do. This was an external pressure onto the family, as the threats from the German Nazis intensified, and she decided that it was far more merciful to the children to have them poisoned rather then sent to the gas chambers. The image of her feeding the poison to the children is what I chose to depict in my last drawing.

    The second portion of the semester has had a focus on how the Holocaust has continued to cause devastation and familial conflict even after the war ended. Of the texts we have read, Maus by Art Speigelman and Still Alive by Ruth Kluger were two very different accounts of the Holocaust, however there was one strong continuity between the texts: the effects of the Holocaust were not exclusive to any single person or family, survivors and their offspring continued to suffer long after escaping the camps. The constant tension documented in Maus between Speigelman and his father was not exclusive to their family as Holocaust survivors; Ruth Kluger also incorporates her family struggles into her book by detailing the differences between her and her mother, even after her mother has passed away. Because their experiences differ, with Speigelman being the son of a Holocaust victim and Kluger actually enduring it, the texts took different forms, both linguistically and aesthetically, to communicate their messages of familial conflict.

His marriage with Mala was also destroyed because of old habits formed by his past. Confused and complicated emotions formed in Art for the overall sense of the book. This work showed how the past ruined the present and potentially the future as well. The stylistic features included in this comic, along with literary themes, created a peculiar book - dissimilar to other Holocaust works.

The theme of loss is shown in the falling grip, as man is losing his faith in God.     Trauma and recovery both have cycles in which an individual must pass through to heal. For those having lived through the Holocaust, these stages were well defined and could be addressed. However, when addressed, they only address the individual, not the group nor those affected in a secondary way. This creates a dichotomy between those experiencing an internal conflict, survivor or otherwise, and those who had experienced the physical external conflict of the Holocaust. Following this, I will continue analyzing the graphic element of Maus focusing on the external conflict and how the use of visual symbolism and linkage creates a sense of unity and identity. Moving on to the literary aspect of the novel, I will explore Anja’s internal conflict with life and how it not only polarized her own mind but separated her from her son physically and mentally. The show is influential to our culture today because it shows these different types of families and addresses controversial themes such as gay adoption, the different family connections and communications, intergenerational coupling, and acceptance of diversity within an extended family.
