If you had an illness, such as cancer, would you be okay with animal testing for medical benefit to help save your live? Animal testing is a controversial topic, however, in the past it has benefit human life, government regulations have been set, and could continue to aid in human and animal life. Animal testing for medical purposes has many advantages and should continue to extend a people’s and animal’s lives. Millions of people can benefit from animal research for medical purposes. There is much debate if animals should be used because they don't have the exact same anatomy, and animals have rights, too. However, animals have very identical anatomy to humans. “Humans and non-animals (especially mammals) are anatomically and physiologically …show more content…

However, this is not true. The government sets regulations that researchers have to follow when doing experiments. They set these regulations because the FDA requires that some products be tested on animals before they can even be consumed or used by humans. Burnett states, “Medical drugs and commercial products need to be safe for human to use.” The government agency that is required and responsible for the safety of people using these products is the FDA (Burnett 2). No scientist likes to test on animals, though, it is necessary to advance in medical research. Animals that are used for testing are not overused. Scientists that are about to do an experiment decide the animal based on cost, maintenance, and how the animal would parallel to a human. The scientist doing the research has to show the government how effective the animal they plan on testing is going to be compared to the human body. The government sets laws that drugs have to do medical research on animals before the drug is allowed to be accessed by the public (Saraf). Animals such as rats and rabbits are the most ideal for experiments. They are small for handling, but still have relatively the same anatomy. Surgeries for joints or with screws are normally experimented on with larger animals. Larger animals are only used if needed, because they are cost more money to house and …show more content…

Numerous cures and medications to help illnesses have been found because of the use of vivo testing. “Over 160 drugs and vaccinations from animal testing have been approved by the U.S. FDA” (Sun). This proves that animal testing has a purpose. Scientists have the three ‘R’s’ as a legal requirement. They consist of refinement, reduction, and replacement. Refinement is minimizing the pain of the animals. Reduction is using the least amount of animals possible for the experiments. Lastly, trying to replace animals whenever the scientists can with other options. These ‘R’s’ are one of the requirements the government sets to make sure that animals get better treatment (Saraf). If something happens to go wrong with the animal, they will die painlessly after the experiments. Animals have helped immensely to the health and well being of both humans and your feline friend. With cures, inoculations, and antibiotics being found, it has added another 23.5 years to a humans life. Animal testing has played such a important role in human lives. The average life expectancy is 80 years old as of 2016. In the future, this could add another 20 years and make the average age 100. The next generation could live a healthier lifestyle and continue to make more advancements in the medical field. This is proof in the past animal testing has benefit and isn't pointless. Another example of how animal testing has worked is with
