In Measure for Measure, Shakespeare presents and considers the exercise of power and how it is used and misused in the corrupt, morally decaying society of Vienna. The authoritative figures in the play hold the power of the law, a choice between legalistic justice and mercy based on the “stricture statures” and “most biting” laws of Vienna. Women, facing a life of piety, prostitution or marriage, seek self fulfilling power through seduction and temptation of men. The power of unknowing, through disguise and deceit not only achieves the maintenance of ones reputation but also fulfilling the desires of some to create a facade of the morally corrupt workings of individuals in the play. Although the Duke holds power, he lacks the ability to provide an example of purity for society, instead lending his authority to a “severe” Angelo, a individual who aims only to “curve the headstrong weeds” without any leniency or mercy. Angelo’s “little brief authority” is abused, becoming “tyranny” rather than serving justice or restoring any moral compass. He exploits his power as a law enforcer to satisfy his desire for Isabella, forcing her to chose between her brother life and her own desire of piety as part of a puritan society. His misuse of power is highlighted in this extortion of Isabella, hypocrisy towards the law and his inclination to seek justice alone and not mercy. Contrasting this, Escalus’ authority is used to a measured and equitable way, arguing against Angelo’s harsh application of law.
