How does Shakespeare in ‘Measure for Measure’ explore the use of imagery and language to present characters and key ideas?
The power of love is greater than anything.
The most influential writer in all English literature and certainly the most important playwright of the English Renaissance, William Shakespeare who has written the play ‘Measure for Measure’ based on theme of power and role of women, set against the backdrop of the Viennese society during 1604.
In this play, Shakespeare has utilised many symbolisms, such as language delivery and imagery styles through characters to present the position of women and the ideal situation where people living during 16s to 17s. Back to 16s and 17s, where there was no gender equality, Shakespeare has explored this issue by demonstrating the attitude of Angelo towards Isabella. Angelo Who is the lord of the community, once he realizes that there is so much self-determination and unlawful sexual activity within the society, he selfishly uses his politics to punish Claudio Isabella’s brother who impregnate his fiancée before they were married. Angelo uses this situation to have unlawful sexual relationship with Isabella, to save her brother Claudio. For instance, “Save your brother by slipping with me or he will be put to death”. Angelo ask Isabella in act 2 scene 4, P.g. 99. This is strongly suggesting the inequality of gender or domination of Angelo on Isabella. However, Isabella beg Angelo to release her brother “I have a brother who’s condemned to death. I beg you, condemn his crime but not him.” In Act 2, scene 2. p.g. 67.
