Andrew Jackson was a very influential, and controversial, president and Great American. Andrew Jackson was born on March 15th, 1767. He died on June 8th, 1845(“History.net”). He was 6’1” and weighed 145lbs(“History.net”). He also was the first president to try to be assassinated(“waltercoffey.wordpress.com”). The first reason why Andrew Jackson was a Great American is that, he taught himself law and was a prominent lawyer. The only formal school that Andrew Jackson had was a small elementary school in Waxhaw(“nccssm.edu”). For all of his other schooling he taught himself law by studying law books and studying with prominent lawyers in the North Carolina area(“History.net”). Since Andrew Jackson was a small time lawyer in the North Carolina In the first battle, Battle of Horseshoe Bend, he defeated Chief Menewa in the Creek War. Jackson was able to defeat Chief Menewa by using a small army of current soldiers, and volunteers(“millercenter.com”). The next battle Jackson was involved in was the Battle of new Orleans. In this battle, Andrew Jackson attacked a small British outpost with a small army of slaves, volunteers, and even pirates!(“americaslibery.gov”). After the victory at the outpost, Jackson moved on to a larger fort in Pensacola(“americaslibery.gov”). Andrew Jackson was able to surprise everyone by maintaining a calm composure during the battle, this would help to propel him in top the White House(“americaslibery.gov”). Another battle that Andrew Jackson won was the Battle of Talladega(“encyclopediaofalabama.org”). In this battle, Andrew Jackson, and our current allies the Creek Indians were able to capture Fort Leslie(“encyclopediaofalabama.org”). Other relevant victories include the Battle of Barrancas, where he captured the fort by bombarding it with artillery from a nearby hill. All of these victories earned him a reputation as a well respected general and would eventually propel him to the White On January 8th, 1835, a senator stood up to declare that the national debt had been paid(for now)(“npr.org”). This was a enormous moment in his presidency and U.S. history. This was an important thing to Andrew Jackson who hated debt, and though it was immoral(“npr.org”). At the start of his presidency, he disbanded the national banks, he hated the banks more than the debt. To begin the process of removing debt, Andrew Jackson blocked every bill to spend money(“npr.org”). After that, he began selling all of the land in the west because, there was a large demand as the country was expanding(“waltercoffey.com”). After Andrew Jackson was able to remove the debt, he was said, “Let us commemorate the payment of the public debt as an event that gives us increased power as a nation and reflects luster on our Federal Union.(Encyclopedia of Presidents)” However, this perpetual bliss could not last forever. Since the banks had been removed, Jackson had nowhere to put the money, so he gave it to the states(“npr.org”).The states then started printing massive ammounts of money, which caused the economy to enflate drastically(“npr.org”). In an effort to slow this down, Jackson required that all government land sales be done with gold or silver(“npr.org”). However, this caused the economy to crash. Andrew Jackson was undoubtedly a man of the people. He was the first president to be chosen by the people and his background was not that of a typical president. He was not born into a rich family. Jackson's favored the general public rather than the wealthy. His election shifted the balance of power from the wealthy East Coast, to farmers and small businesspeople in the west. Jackson vetoed more bills than all previous presidents did in an attempt to help the common man.
When the time came for the Civil War Jackson was ready. He left VMI to become a colonel and lead a brigade of men in the Battle of Bull Run. This is the battle where he received his nickname. When General Bee saw Jackson holding his position he said, "There is Jackson standing like a stonewall. Rally behind the Virginians." He held his ground at Bull Run so he was promoted to General Jackson.

Amongst his greatest accomplishments were evoking the "common man" to be interested in government and tailoring democracy to satisfy the same "common man's" needs. Of course, Jackson could not go about making such radical changes without supporters, but that never surfaced as a problem. Jacksonian Democrats, as they came to be called, were great in number during the 1820's and 1830's. They advocated all of the issues that President Jackson did, and did so with great vigor. They thought of themselves very highly because they recognized their responsibilities as American citizens. They realized that as political leaders they had a true purpose- to protect and serve the American people. The Jacksonians justified their view of themselves in their sincere attempts to guard the United States Constitution by both promoting equality of economic opportunity and increasing political democracy, but they had their downfalls with issues of individual liberties.
Andrew Jackson is a starting out politician, he is a very strong, brave, hot tempered man. He also a people's man. He enjoys everything the average American does because he's not a stuck up, formal , rich man. He says it how it is. Saying it how it is though, is not though is not always accepted by everyone.
