On August 6th and 9th two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings were the first and only time nuclear weaponry has been used in wartime directly on humans. These bombs were the first of their kind, developed by the United States, Canada and Great Britain under the research development plan codenamed the “Manhattan Project”. It is an important issue because there is much controversy over whether or not the atomic bombs should’ve been initially been dropped. Many sides say the bombing was morally wrong because it defied many people’s human rights, but these people don’t see it was the least violent way to force the Japanese to surrender and bring WW2 to an end. The United States were justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan because it finally spread justice for the Japanese atrocious crimes against humanity in the city of Nanking, China, saved many American, British and Japanese lives, and demonstrated American dominance over the Soviet Union. Finally, the atomic bombings were an effective and justified way to end WW2 and force Japan surrender
In 1937 when the Japanese army took over the Chinese city of Nanking they demonstrated barbaric forms of rape, torture, and death towards Chinese civilians; justifying the American retribution for firing the atomic bombs on Japan. Moreover, the Japanese people got quick and painless deaths from the atomic bombs whereas the people of Nanking suffered long and cruel methods of diabolical torture. Some of the many Japanese foul ways of torture included “burial castration, the carving of organs, roasting of people and hanging by the tongue” (Chang, 1998, 21). ...-1945 with the most barbaric and inhumane being the acts in Nanking China; the bombs acted as revenge for the Chinese people. Also, an allied invasion of Japan in 1945 would’ve costed the Japanese 474 % more military and civilian casualties than the bombings. Furthermore the bombings helped the United States secure its dominance and power over the Soviet Union. . Although WW2 was the only time where nuclear warfare was used, it may always be the most significant because it was a shock to the rest of the world of the potential power and destruction nuclear weapons possessed. The dropping of the atomic bombs also brought a quick and surprising end to a war that seemed to last forever. Perhaps again in the future there will be a new weapon of unprecedented destruction, but for now Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only examples of where such a destructive weapon was used.
