Analysis: The Lesson Of The Moth By Don Marquis

In the poem The Lesson of The Moth, written by Don Marquis, he tells a story of a moth that is attracted to a bright light. In this poem, the story is being told by a fictional cockroach. The cockroach sees the moth trying to get into the lightbulb, to commit suicide, therefore, he asks him questions and tries to talk him out of it. When the cockroach asks him why he is doing that, the moth then proceeds to respond with “It is better to be a part of beauty for one instant and then cease to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty.” (Don Marquis). In other words, Don Marquis is trying to say that it is better to be apart of the brighter side of life and the more positive things it has to offer and then to die with contentment, rather than “existing” and not really “living”. I relate to Don Marquis with this quote because that really is what life is all about if you were to sum it up. In my personal opinion, I believe that to live life to its fullest meaning is when you face all of your fears, ready and motivated to tackle it with all of your strength and bravery. Life is when you have an open mind about literally any situation with no judgement involved, just ready to conquer any and everything that is decided to be thrown in your direction. Life is when you make the most out of any negative situation and translate it to a positive situation. Life is full of negative things for you to focus and dwell upon, but how many positive things are there? Just as many. But those who are weak-minded tend to take one negative thing and run with it, not stopping to think of what happiness that something so dark can withhold. This means making the most of what you have no matter how small and no matter how useless. Life is about never accepting less of the life you know you are capable of living, because you know your
