College is supposed to be a time to remember, for students to find themselves and start a new chapter in their lives. Instead, one girl will remember signing papers that said “Rape Victim”. Her perpetrator, also a college student and athlete, will be remembered as the man who raped an unconscious woman and walked away with very little punishment. Outrage and shock emerged once the public heard about Brock Turner’s sentence. In Ashley Fantz article, “Outrage over 6-month sentence for Brock Turner in Stanford rape case” from the June 7, 2016 issue of CNN, she uses pathos and logos through quotes and interviews to effectively show the faulty logic throughout the case and how the state of California did not deliver justice to the perpetrator of sexual assault.

Turner’s father, Dan Turner had wrote a letter to the judge asking him to go easy on his son. Dan said that a long sentence would be “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 years of life”. This one phrase made many people furious and outraged. The father had also said that Turner is having a hard time eating his favorite food, steak, because he is so distraught from the trial. A Stanford professor was shocked that this father would compare not being able to eat steak to being sexually assaulted. Before the sentence was given, the twenty three year old victim wrote a twelve page letter describing in detail how the rape affected her life. She had felt that the jury of her peers did not give justice for the horrible assault she endured. She explained how she went to fraternity party near Stanford, drank a lot, then did not know what had happened to her once she regained consciousness in the hospital. Rape is a hidden epidemic that affects many lives world wide. It is a problem that is so terrifying and uncomfortable that people do not talk about it. John Krakauer, author of Missoula, focuses on this issue of rape in the college town of Missoula, Montana. His focus is specifically on the case of Allison Huguet and Beau Donaldson. As the progression of Allison 's case continues we learn of more and more rape cases that happened to women on this same campus. A majority of women do not report these cases, we later learn as Krakauer continues through Allison 's case, because reporting and pursuing the case would be giving their life away. In July of 2008, one of the biggest crime cases devastated the United States nation-wide. The death of Caylee Anthony, a two year old baby, became the most popular topic in a brief amount of time. Caylee’s mother, Casey Anthony, became the main suspect after the child supposedly was kidnapped and went missing. To this day, the Casey Anthony case shocks me because justice, in my opinion, wasn’t served. I feel as if the criminal conviction system became somewhat corrupted in this case. The entire nation, including the court system, knew that Casey Anthony was behind this criminal act, but yet she escaped all charges. I chose this case not only because it’s debatable, but also to help state the obvious, this case was handled the wrong way. Clearly the legal system was biased, which worked in Casey Anthony’s favor, freeing a murderer.
The number of sexually abused children is five times what it was in 2012. Jerry Sandusky has contributed to this statistic. Jerry Sandusky was the head coach of the Pennsylvania State Football team (Penn. State). He has a wife and a few children, some adopted from his charity organization, the second mile, but this did not stop him from committing the crimes he did. Jerry Sandusky was convicted of raping ten innocent children, some of which he met through his charity. This earned him thirty-sixty years behind bars. There are issues from this case that are similar to some issues in the play, Twelve Angry Men. Ultimately, throughout both cases the jury was faced with difficult decisions. In both cases the verdict took a long time and a lot of thinking. But, in the end both came out with the right resolution. Sandusky’s reputation of being the guy everyone looked up to made the overall decision of the jury, in this case, inordinately difficult.
A young Emma Sulkowicz was starting her second year as a Columbia art major, was raped in her dorm room. Emma didn 't report the incident at first, but when hearing about two other classmates who told her the same rapist was abusing them too, she pressed charges with the administration. Students tend to be uneasy reporting rape because the police aren 't always great with rape charges. After six months of Columbia not hearing Emma 's charges, they found the rapist in favor, (Grigoradis Vanessa, The Cut). Among college women, nine in ten victims of rape and sexual assault knew their offender, (Fisher, National institute of Justice). Emma falls under that nine, knowing the rapist, Paul, very well. ... athletes to do as they please. However he does not do a good job of being non-partisan. He leads his readers to believe the only group of people who would do such things are “jocks”. This bias is not true. The newspapers report that University fraternities, and secret societies are as likely, if not more likely, to commit these very same acts. He also leads the reader to believe that all athletes and athletic teams are similar. The impression he leaves about the majority of teams and their members is prejudicial and unfair. It is very unfortunate and disheartening that members of a community that were so highly reguarded, would commit such acts. It is even more disturbing to hear about the scenario leading up to the rape, and the community which produced these troubled young men. It is more important to look at why the events took place rather than who committed them, because ultimately the only innocent person involved is the victim, a mentally handicapped young girl, named Lesli Faber.
This report will illustrate a three hour court observation concerning a trial of a Rape case. The defendant was under trial for two counts of rape under the District Court of South Australia. The district court which is an intermediate court, hear matters that are more serious than the magistrates courts, “this court also conduct trials that are presided over a judge and sometimes with juries”. Susan Griffin’s Rape: The All-American Crime touches on many issues within American society. She begins by recounting how she was taught to be afraid of strange men from such a young age that she had not yet learned what it was she was so afraid of, and then goes into her experience with harassment, an experience shared by every woman at some point in her life. Griffin recounts the belief that all rapists are insane and the proof that they are just normal men and dispels the myth that rape is normal activity that is prohibited by society. However, she goes on to clarify that our culture views rape: “as an illegal, but still understandable, form of behavior” (Griffin 514). Sexual assault and rape awareness is not emphasized as much as it should be on college campuses. Most students think, “That will never happen to me”. ...re was a new newsletter detailing a nighttime attack on campus every 2 months. They’d have a police sketch, campus escort numbers, everything. Nobody’s going to pick up a paper and read “Jenny Eldman was Raped by Bobby Porter Last Night Even Though He Said He Just Wanted to Hang Out and Study For the English Mid-Term” It’s because these crimes are so very personal they go unmentioned, despite their obvious frequency. Just as “the personal is political,” rape is not a private issue, but a public one. Acquaintance rape cannot be considered solely a "personal" issue involving a particular man and a particular woman. It is a problem that concerns all men and all women because it deals with the basic issue of the ways in which men and women relate to each other. There is a need for rape prevention programs in colleges and universities not only to help women protect themselves but to help men understand the issue of rape. Denial is an easy solution for both the victims and perpetrators of this “hidden” crime. Hopefully as the facts about aqauintance rape come to the surface, people will get the information they need to re-shape their ideas. Isn’t that what college is for?
One of the more pressing victim issues in today’s society is campus crime and how it is dealt with. In colleges all over the nation students become victims everyday to crimes whether it be theft, rape, or even peer pressure, which can result in injury or death of the student or even another student. Many campus crimes that occur aren’t reported because victims feel they will be criticized and ridiculed. When crimes are reported they are hastily looked over and often have unfair judgment in the case so the university doesn’t look bad. Campus crimes must be dealt with more thoroughly and more professionally and College’s must start taking responsibility for the crimes that occur. We will be taking a closer look at certain cases such as the Brock Turner and Allen Artis case to get a better understanding of the situations that do occur and how the cases are dealt with.

1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault as an adult (cite). To me, that statistic is mindboggling. I’m not sure people are really aware of the fact that in our society women are raped every single day or maybe they are aware but it doesn’t truly affect their lives until it happens to them or someone they know. Rape is a serious crime. I’m not sure there is a worse crime than rape. Rape is when one person violates the personal space of another. More times than not the attacker is male and the victim is female. With rape not only are you at risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases but also your piece of mind is taken away. Women can experience symptoms of PTSD after being raped. Rape is crime where the act in itself is awful, but also dealing with it after is very painful as well. If our society were more knowledgeable about rape maybe it wouldn’t happen as much. Knowing the difference between the different characteristics of a serial rapist versus a single victim rapist could potentially help women or men identify their attacker, if they know what to look for. This may be more of a struggle for if the attacker is a stranger or a one-time offender, but if women are able to give details about their attack, this could help the criminal justice system find these criminals after the fact. In this paper, I will explain and critique three different studies that were conducted comparing and contrasting serial rapists and single-victim rapists.
