After the death of his erratic and eccentric brother, a guilt-ridden sibling begins to think his brother might still be alive. STORY COMMENTS SHADOWBOX is a character driven, psychological, dramatic thriller. The script stands out as being highly original and refreshing. There’s nothing predictable about the plot or the characters. The plot is driven by solid themes about abandonment, trust, commitment, betrayal, and life choices. The script also explores strong themes about personal privacy, which is so relevant to today’s society. Essentially, the script centers on the relationship between two brothers and the idea that they have created a “shadowbox” that is able to spy on people and send messages, completely undetected. One brother is completely obsessed with the box, while the other brother is more realistic and sees a practical use to the invention, putting them at odds. It’s a bit unconventional as a structure. In other words, this isn’t a story in which there’s a strong declaration of an external goal by the end of act one. Jack’s goal is to get the shadowbox to work, but that’s not really what the story is about. It’s about the brothers. The structure also utilizes several flashbacks to narrate the plot. While flashbacks can be disruptive, they actually appear to work in this presentation to move the story forward. Each flashback reveals new information. Owen’s decision to go to the lake is a smart story choice. The tension begins to really escalate as he searches for signs of life. The visions and the laughter are well crafted. The audience vacillates between wondering if Owen is going crazy or if Jack is alive. When Owen finds Jack, there are so many telling moments between the brothers.
