Lowry establishes the uniqueness and eeriness of her setting by showing that there is no privacy. There is always someone watching you and someone listening to you so when family members are required to share feelings or dreams with one another, they are also sharing them with whomever is listening in at the other end of the speaker. Lowry uses characterization when she describes Jonas’s eyes and how they are different from others. She isolated him to be different from everyone else to make him standout from everyone. Jonas and Gabriel have huge resemblance as both of them have blue eyes and receive memories which indicate that they has the same gift they are different.
