Jeffery: AIDS, HIV, and Love The movie Jeffery, directed by Christopher Ashley, is a comedy with elements of drama that gives a glimpse into the life of Gay men in the 1990’s. Jeffery follows the life of the titular main character, Jeffery, a Gay man who is a sex compulsive. Jeffery becomes fearful of the HIV and AIDS epidemic and chooses to become celibate, due to his fear of contracting HIV. Unfortunately for Jeffery, he immediately meets the man of his dreams, Steve, whom is HIV positive. So, we watch as Jeffery must choose between his own morals, and his love for a man that challenges them. That being said, throughout the film we get an indication of the overwhelming issue of HIV and AIDS in the Gay community. Furthermore, Jeffery shows how homophobia and HIV have a connection. In addition how there is a stigma towards Gay men , and how there is stigma with those who have HIV within the LGBTQ+ community. Accordingly, we shall view the AIDS and HIV epidemic and how this has effected the LGBTQ+ community. “Gay Bashing,” is what it is called when a person or a group of individuals attack and harm a person of the LGBTQ+ community (Levay, Baldwin, & Baldwin, 2015). This is an issue that people in the LGBTQ+ community continue to face. Eventually, Jeffery is attacked by a group of men. While they are attacking him, they call him slurs, and say he is infected with AIDS (Ashley, 1995). This is important to focus on, because there is a belief by homophobic individuals that all Gay men have AIDS.
