Mixed Blood Theatre’s rendition of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is both a mystery and an examination of the complex and often morally murky nature of human relationships. The play tells the story of 15-year-old math and astronomy enthusiast Christopher Boone, who decides to investigate the murder of his neighbor’s dog. As Christopher goes about his investigation, he keeps uncovering new mysteries, each one closer to him than the last. Although it’s never stated in the play, Christopher, played by Macgregor Arney, is on the autism spectrum. His experience as a non-neurotypical individual is portrayed with a raw, realistic consistency. Christopher’s family members, as well as the dynamics between them, are well intended but deeply flawed. Christopher’s father, Ed, who is played by Zach Meyers, is the more patient and understanding of his parents. Although Ed is compassionate and takes care of Christopher, he has a cruel temper and controlling tendencies. Ed is fiercely critical of Christopher’s mother, Judy, because she left them when she felt that she couldn’t properly care for them. Judy, played by Miriam Laube, could have easily been portrayed as a selfish, irresponsible parent. However, the play shows her loving and attentive, despite her mistakes. She’s the one who is able to calm Christopher down when he is most distressed, and she is willing to turn her own life upside down again in order to amend her past mistakes.
