I read two different short stories, both of which that had very valuable lessons and unique story lines. One short story did not interest me much, but the other one did. Both of these short stories had themes, they both had the theme of tradition and appearance. Even though both of these short stories are somewhat true, I found a great interest and value in The Necklace. The other short story was The Lottery which was the one that did not interest me much or give me any sense of value or a life lesson.

She lives in an imaginary world in her head where her actual life does not match the ideal life she is living. She believes her beauty and charm make her worthy of greater things. She wears knock-off jewelry, clothes, and goes to high end parties, but dresses and acts like she is wealthy. The bliss of her evening at these parties were not achieved by angst, and the reality of her appearance is much different than it seems. The party is a conquest because for the first time, her appearance matches the reality of her life. Her wealth and class are simply illusions, and other people are easily deceived. I liked this short story because it relates to people today being concerned with their appearance and social class instead of their character and being blessed with what they have. As a reader I did not embrace The Lottery story for certain reasons. The Lottery explains a certain theme in the story which is tradition and how the tradition involves killing mostly innocent people, some guilty for no reason. Today there are no traditions like that and if there ever was, it would be rejected immediately. There would be some people who would love to kill innocent people or murder people they don’t like, but they would be thrown in prison. The Necklace short story tells a story about a girl wanting to be someone she is not, and that is a major issue today. There are many people who want to be someone they are not and even pretend to be someone they are not as well. I have learned to accept myself for who I am and to be blessed with what I have. I can only dream now and follow my dreams to become someone even better and to have a successful future for myself and to take care of my family and
The stories, “The Things they Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, have some similar characteristics and others are different. Keeping a tradition, however, in “The Things they Carried” the main character actually wakes up and changes how he is and becomes more realistic. Unlike “The lottery” where everyone is participating in a murder but not noticing what they are actually doing; to them it is a tradition. The settings are quite the opposite in these stories and also how the characters act. The theme of these stories are the same, however there are other elements that are different in these stories, such as their settings and characters.

The killer’s plan in the “Tell-Tale Heart” actually works and is able to hide his actions for a long time. While in “The Lottery” the town is peaceful and everyone is going through their daily lives. People seem excited for the lottery and seems that something positive will occur. But in the end for both of these stories bad things happen towards the people in the story. The killer has guilt get to him and he confesses that he is a murder. While in the lottery is actually a dark event that makes whoever wins becomes a sacrifice. The 2 themes both tell the story of death. They are both terrible stories, but tell people important themes. One is that you shouldn’t do something without understanding why you are doing it. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” carries that theme of tradition. The story follows a small town that performs the tradition of holding an annual lottery in which the winner gets stoned to death. It (tradition) is valued amongst human societies around the world, but the refusal of the villagers in “The Lottery” to let go of a terrifying long-lasting tradition suggests the negative consequences of blindly following these traditions such as violence and hypocrisy.
