Poetry is prose bewitched, as stated by Mina Loy. When we focus on the poem there is a strong sense of emotion that it captures within us. Unlike the prose, the poem twists and turns and challenges us to find the hidden meanings within the lines. We see an example of this in line 10, “lace to these gals is lacing up.” However, prose is very straightforward and really only tells us what we need to know. Although it still expresses an idea like poetry, it isn’t feeling filled like the poem. Poetry has the purpose of engulfing your mind with the unique emotions it betrays. Poetry is something that is to be read delicately and cautiously if one wanted to find meaning through the words. Readers have to be gentle and patiently ponder about what they are reading in order to find any significance in the poem. If someone is not patient with reading, they will not feel impacted by poetry and will not want to read it. In Billy Collins’, “Introduction to Poetry,” he uses figurative language to help readers see that the way to enjoy and understand poetry is by reading between the lines and being patient with how each individual relates to the readings.
I would like to investigate the many struggles of women, whether it be race that differentiates them or an event that any woman could experience that brings them together. Beauty is not easily defined, and women everywhere struggle with not only pleasing the people around them, but themselves. To understand the multiple meanings of a poem, readers must examine its words and phrasing from the perspectives of rhythm, sound, images, obvious meaning, and implied meaning. Readers then need to organize responses to the verse into a logical, point-by-point explanation. A good beginning involves asking questions that apply to most poetry.
Set in modern time, the play Haiku written by Kate Snodgrass is a thirty-minute drama with themes of unconditional love and deception, in the play Haiku, the audience looks on the life of a mother and her two daughters. In the play, the mother, Nell, is described as a woman in her 50’s who has been taking care of her daughter Louise, who is in 20’s and has some form of autism (possibly Tourette’s). During her time taking care of Louise, Nell discovers that sometimes Louise is more present, and when so, she is able to communicate with Nell by reciting haikus. In poetry, we can vent our frustration and interpretations of the world around us on paper. Poets make their points using metaphors or little stories to bring them out. When reading poetry, I always put myself in the shoes of the first or third person to better understand what is trying to be put across in the words of the sonnets. Most poems can mean anything to anybody. There are many cases in which you see people finding beauty in things they don't even understand, such as an Italian Opera or Ancient Hieroglyphics painted on a pyramid wall. Poetry can be silly, cheesy, boring or down right appealing and consuming to the readers eyes.
The poem “Steps” by Naomi Shihab Nye, is a piece about Arabic immigrants and the effect of their differing levels of assimilation. Nye describes how the immigrants absorb the new culture. In the New World, America, different people can adapt in a myriad of ways. According to the author, some non-natives may assimilate to the American culture more than others, but overall, if someone forgets their original culture and does not teach the next generations, the culture will die.
The most preeminent quality of Sonia Sanchez “Ballad” remains the tone of the poem, which paints a didactic image. Sanchez is trying to tell this young people that we know nix about love as well as she is told old for it. In an unclear setting, the poem depicts a nameless young women and Sanchez engaged in a conversation about love. This poem dramatizes the classic conflict between old and young. Every old person believes they know more then any young person, all based on the fact that they have been here longer then all of us. The narrative voice establishes a tone of a intellectual understanding of love unraveling to the young women, what she comprehends to love is in fact not.

Li-Young Lee’s poem, A Story, explores a complex relationship between a father and his five year old son. Although the poem’s purpose is to elaborate on the complexity of the relationship and the father’s fear of disappointing his son, the main conflict that the father is faced with is not uncommon among parents. Lee is able to successfully portray the father’s paranoia and son’s innocence through the use of alternating point of view, stanza structure, and Biblical symbolism.
Through written communications, writers use a myriad of literary devices, to communicate ideas. With the use of metaphors, diction, and personification, writers are able to construct articles, books, and poems. Two examples of these included “Birthday” by M. T Buckley and “The Secret Life of Books” by Stephen Edgar. Each of these poems is trying to show an opinion toward the topic. The author in “Birthday” is trying to show how being born is similar to being in World War 2. On the other hand, “The secret Life of Books” is trying to show how books change the readers. Both poems use conceit, diction, and personification with the structure in order to convey their meaning of the poems.
I believe the poem “The Secrets We Hide” by Tiffany Franklin, is about struggling to find the meaning of our life. While struggling we don’t realize that answers were hidden with us all along. Even though the answers we may find are not something we want to accept, it’s something we need to learn to embrace instead of hiding it. The poem suggests that we needs to release this secrets because the more we hide the things that cause us pain the more we struggle to enjoy a happy life. The author’s purpose of writing this poem is to help people learn to accept who they are instead letting the pain inside of them destroyed them. When reading or listening to poetry, the main objective for me is to feel moved. Happiness, longing, sadness are some of the feelings that can be achieved just by listening to others’ words. It is within these words that creates another world, or separates us from our own. Words all have a certain kind of attachment to them, so if used properly an author can stimulate a reader beyond belief.
According to Webster's Dictionary, poetry is defined as "writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm." While this is the technical definition of poetry many writers attempted to further describe what poetry is. There are many contradicting views and no one can agree what is the essence of poetry. Some poets think that poetry is the expression of emotions and rules do not matter, while other poets suggest the poetry is all about the rules and the rhythm that must be followed. The perfect mix to define poetry is somewhere in between.
