If they cannot turn to doctors they turn to dieting. Sometimes this is a dieting program they found on the television. Other times it can be an unhealthy eating habit. In the Huffington post, "Weight stigma has been shown to increase maladaptive eating and coping behaviors, such as binge eating and emotional eating, and diminish motivation for exercise. Studies have shown that patients who experience judgmental interactions from their physician are less likely to successfully lose weight, and those who experience weight bias are nearly three times more likely to develop obesity over time, compared with persons who do not experience weight bias( Huffington post). This study shows that if doctors were less prejudice, then maybe more people would turn to doctors for advice rather than fad programs or eating disorders.
Worley is very effective with the emotional appeal, because the article expresses her retelling of the events of her life. Some of her sources like Dr. Budd are proven to be incorrect; therefore, make Worley ineffective towards these points. In “Cruelty, Civility, and Other Weighty Matters” by Ann Marie Paulin, she was trying to get across a very important message: skinny doesn’t mean happy. The main idea was about how our culture in America encourages obesity because of the food choices they offer, how expensive weight loss pills and exercise bikes is, and etc., yet the culture also is prejudice against these same fat people that they encourage. It’s a constant back and forth in America between what is convenient with the little time we have in between everything we have to do each day and working out to be skinny enough for everyone to not judge you. Three main “tools” are used in order to achieve this goal or ideal. The Cult of Thinness invests in thinness through primary rituals. The rituals are followed through by the obsession of a particular “ideal” body. There are also extremities or positions of higher authority with extreme involvement in cults, much like the level of devotion in The Cult of Thinness.

In Nancy Hall's "Obesity Lawsuits" (2004) essay, Hall is determined to address the problem constantly growing and silently taking lives in America every day, obesity. The author goes on to argue that people should not be suing "fast food companies" (Hall, 2004, p. 113), but rather look at themselves to blame for becoming obese. Americans need to think about their own decisions routinely, exercise to keep the extra weight off and choose meals that are healthier (Hall, 2004). The authors thesis states: "Listening to the subtle nuance emerging from legal debate, we can hear a discernable message that clearly spells out the desperate need for further study, public awareness, and education on obesity in America" (Hall, 2004, p.114).
