Have you ever thought about your past and absorbed how much you’ve changed? In the Memoir of Jennings Michael Burch “They Cage the Animals at Night”,the story is regarding how Jennings tolerates change in certain points in the book. For instance in chapter___,an indication where Jennings undergoes change is when he met a man named Clarence who gives Jennings advice for something he is struggling with. Jennings thinks he can only have a couple friends, Clarence told Jennings he can have more than one friend,you can have a million. Jennings asks how is he supposed to have 1 million friends. Clarence responded you only have to make room with the person you’re with. Another indication of change is when Jennings met Stacy at “The Home of the Angels”
“I’ll be right back.”(Burch, 4) Those were the last words his mother said to him before leaving. Jennings Michael Burch wouldn’t have been able to survive living in and out of New York orphanages without the support of his family and friends. His autobiographical novel, They Cage the Animals at Night, recounts his painful memories of when he lived in many different orphanages from the time he was eight till his early teens. All Jennings wanted in life was to belong to someone. He had a very unstable life when he was young, he never knew how long he would be at home before he would have to be lent out to a new family or go to an orphanage because his mother was too sick to care for him and his brothers. Ethel Waters overcame a very tough childhood to become one of the most well known African American entertainers of her time. Her story, The Eye on the Sparrow, goes into great detail about her life and how she evolved from taking care of addicts to becoming the star of her own show. Ethel was born by her mother being raped at a young age. Her father, John Waters, was a pianist who played no role in Ethel’s life. She was raised in poverty and it was rare for her to live in the same place for over a year. Ethel never fit in with the rest of the crowd; she was a big girl, about five nine when she was a teenager, and was exposed to mature things early in her life. This is what helped shape Ethel to be the strong, independent woman she is.

She also directly quotes the original texts to show the changes of current books such as a paragraph from Sellers’ book ‘As It Happened’.

One boy, Simon, is different from all the rest and has the ability to see beyond what the other boys can. He has the capacity to recognize the good and the bad in everything much before the other boys. In spite of the surrounding chaos and dysfunction, Simon is constantly calm and comforting to others. This sense of tranquility is demonstrated in Simon’s encounters with nature, and the forest in particular. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Simon epitomizes the natural, instinctive human goodness brought by connection to the world, and he is an example of nature's calming influence on the behavior of humans.

A mockingbird is a harmless songbird that is known for mimicking the calls and sounds of other birds. Since mockingbirds don’t intentionally harm others, its behavior simply represents innocence and peace. These birds also teach humans an important life lesson—to listen first before responding. For instance, To Kill a Mockingbird, a fiction novel by Harper Lee, tells the story of three children—Scout Finch, Jem Finch, and Charles “Dill” Baker Harris—and their adventures around Maycomb County. Throughout their journey, these children experience times of unfairness where individuals were innocently accused of certain actions, tying into the symbolic meaning of the mockingbird. The novel’s title, To Kill a Mockingbird, provides significance towards not drawing conclusions immediately and not blaming individuals, like Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley, who don’t have a voice in society.
