Firstlife is a book written by Gena Showalter. In the book, there are two lives: the Firstlife and the Everlife. In the Firstlife, people carry out normal lives. During their Firstlife, people must decide which realm they will spend their Everlife in; Myriad or Troika. If a person is unsigned when their Firstlife ends, they will spend their Everlife being tortured in Many Ends. Myriad and Troika both have very different morals and stand for different things. They have been at war with each other for several centuries and they will do whatever it takes to recruit Tenley Lockwood. The main character, Ten Lockwood, is a seventeen year old girl. One theme of the story is that all of our actions will result in consequences, no matter if those consequences are good or bad. It also focuses on the idea that our actions can strongly affect the people around us. This books shows the beauty of free will but also emphasizes the idea that everyone will be held accountable for their actions. This theme is displayed on page 359 when the author writes, “If a crime is committed, a crime must be punished. For every word, every action, there is a choice. Right and wrong. Life and death. Blessing and cursing.” Another theme in Firstlife is that winning isn’t always everything. Throughout the book, Killian struggles with the idea that, “Victors are adored, failures are abhorred.” This theme isn’t introduced until the end of the book, when Killian is losing Ten. He realizes that, even though he failed his mission, Ten is meant to be in Troika, and that’s what is best for her. The author shows this idea on page 437 when Killian says, “I was wrong about so many things. The victor isn’t always adored and the failure isn’t always abhorred.
