Esperanza Rising: Character Change Through Life Events Imagine being born into a rich, wealthy family where your last name is respected and well-known by many. Envision what it would be like living in a big, beautiful house, having the ability to wear fancy silk dresses, and being fortunate enough that you have servants to cook and clean for you. Imagine that every year your birthday is the number one reason to have a huge celebration, just as Esperanza Ortega did. Throughout the story of Esperanza Rising the author, Pam Munoz Ryan, ( 2000) illustrates an image of Esperanza as a young, rich, Mexican girl who is forced to mature and grow up much faster than expected. I feel the situation that helped Esperanza grow and mature is her mother becoming ill and her desire to have her Abuelita close to her and Mama. In this new life and journey, Esperanza realizes she truly fits into her “new life.” She has experience and is now able to be in charge of her household and has learned to survive the life of a “campesina.” Esperanza’s character started from having no skills to learning how to work in the fields, cook, clean, and take care of her family. Anza learned all the skills necessary like the rest of the campesina ladies. She realizes her life is still as rich as it was before, and now sees that materialistic values are not important in life. Esperanza, throughout her experiences, learns to have empathy and love for others as Ryan’s passage depicts, “Esperanza thought about all the beautiful dresses she had outgrown in Mexico. How she wished she could have passed them to Isabel” (p.215). This shows that her character has grown as well as showing empathy for others. This written passage is an ideal depiction of how much Esperanza’s character changed by the end of this story. Her character began as a childish girl and transformed into a mature young lady, a lady who gained a great deal of compassion, empathy, and self-esteem. As a final thought, the novel of Esperanza Rising tells an amazing story that is full of emotions and life events that impact the character of Esperanza, a young lady who was forced to grow and mature very quickly. In addition, this book describes Esperanza’s journey from being born into a privileged, wealthy life to a life of hardships and homelessness. Throughout the book her character transforms from a selfish child who grew up having it all with no demands and no responsibilities into a determined, empathetic, hard worker who now lives to help the well-being of her family.
