The only exercise this generation is getting is for their thumbs. It is said that they scroll miles with their thumbs. Today’s teens feel that their lives are based around their phones and technology. They are too busy looking at nature on their phones, then to actually go out and experience it. If teens stay on their phones they will suffer the consequences of failing relationships, loss of wildlife habitats, and the growth of endangered or extinct species. The article also talks about how we immediately pick up our phones. I have witnessed this happen at a concert before. In which the performers were trying to hype up the crowd but instead of everyone going along with it and dancing, people stood still phone in hand recording instead. I believe that smartphones have also caused people to lack the ability to live in the moment.
In “Connectivity and its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle discusses how often we are found on our technology. Turkle states in her thesis “Technology makes it easy to communicate when we wish and to disengage at will.” In the essay are interviews on several different people, of all ages to get their view on the 21st century. Teens are starting to rely on “robot friendships,” the most communication teens get are from their phones. Are we so busy trying to connect to the media that we are often forgetting what is happening around us?
She analyses how her data collections began to change around 2012, when smartphones really began to advance. Twenge’s article maintains the argument that, while many people have different ideas about the cause for the change in teen attitudes in recent years, she believes that smartphones are greatly to blame. To support her claim, Twenge states that the rates of depression have “skyrocketed” (p. 61) (Pathos). She also says that “There’s not a single exception …. screen activities are linked to less happiness” (p. 63) (Logos). Lastly, Twenge states “In all my analyses of generational data- some reaching back to the 1930’s- I had never seen anything like it” (p. 59)
We all tend to miss out on a lot of wonderful things around us when all we do is look at a screen. We don't acknowledge nature because we are all connected socially and don’t realize how beautiful she is. ”Yet I experienced sometimes that the most sweet and tender, the most innocent and encouraging society may be found in any natural object…” (Thoreau). If once in awhile we would stop and look at all the nature around us we'd realize that we are missing out on many beautiful things and change our thoughts about it. The beauty of nature could last for a long time, while items like the devices that let you look at all the social media can just come and go. “The indescribable innocence and beneficence of nature - of sun and wind and rain, of summer and winter - such health, such cheer, they afford forever!” (Thoreau) If you were to lose everything the beauty of nature will still be there to show you that
Although Twenge conveyed her purpose, the wording of the title may cause offense to readers who are members of iGen. Smartphones did not destroy a generation, it only weakened some of the generations mental health. Twenge’s article could possibly persuade readers to start using their phones less.
As Twenge continues her argument she compares it back to her own experiences which ties up this argument in the successfulness of it. She uses these comparisons to help emphasize important parts of her argument. Beginning with “they think we like our phones more than we like actual people.” This state of unhappiness around teens forms her bigger argument that this is a main reason smartphones have destroyed a generation, “It was exactly the moment where the proportion of Americans who owned a smartphone surpassed 50%”. The owning of smartphones “placed in the young people’s hands are having profound effect on their lives -- and making them seriously unhappy.” Their social interactions decrease and their screen time increases as the years go
That is the wide spread use and availability of the smart phone. I watched my mother get the first IPhone I was young and would play games on it and knew how to use it. Smart phones really changed my development through high school. I would text friends and not call them. I had and still have a Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. All this social media and texting cut down on the face to face talks I would have had with people. Even to this day I would rather shot someone an email then talk to them face to face, it’s more comfortable. Smart phones also tie into my age-graded influence. When I started to drive if I didn’t 100 percent know how to get to a place I would use GPS on my smartphone. The problem is I don’t know my way around my home town. My dad asked me to pick up some tools for him a couple of months ago. He told me directions to where the place was, he used street names and land markers. When he finished telling me this, I still didn’t know where it was. My dad looked at me and said,” when I was your age I knew where everything was, if I didn’t know where a place was I would try and sometimes find new places along the way”. I told him how I just use my GPS. I never remember where the places are because I just follow the voice. I don’t need to remember where places are anymore and that’s because of Smart Phones. Our generation is different from every generation beforehand

Teens were physically active throughout the day before technology was fully exposed to teens. According to the article, Obesity in Children and Technology, Cespedes (2013) stated “The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 10 percent of preschool age children and 15 percent of 6- to 19-year olds, can be considered overweight.
