Summary A rare sighting of an honest portrayal of black life was originally published in 2015 by a man named Ta-Nehisi Coates. This book, Between the World and Me, is a warning to Coates’s son about the world around him and what that could mean for his future. There are examples of news reports dedicated to showing that “The Dream” does not exist the way “white America” believes it exists and analogies enhanced by detailed news reports and blunt personal experiences that both Coates’s and his son have witnessed. Coates leaves a detailed message to his readers about what it is like to be black in a country where everyone “believes themselves to be white.” He appeals to the emotions of readers with factual evidence and personal, unapologetic opinion in order to make his point clear, “white America” …show more content…

When writing a book, being able to have the reader connect with the writer is a main way to sell books. Unfortunately for Coates, his book is of one mind, speaking to one sect of readers, creating a sense of confusion amongst readers that are not in that sect. In the first section of the book he states, “Race is the child of racism not the father,” (p.7) which can be taken several different ways depending on the reader and their experiences. He explains that a portion of what he means by this confusing statement and how it works well with his ideas. But even in his explanation it is hard to understand what he means when he says things like, “Difference in hue and hair is old.” (p.7) Unfortunately with his constant use of euphemism and ambiguity, Coates makes it hard for a reader to grasp the full knowledge of the book and to be empathetic towards it. His blunt candor only allows for so much insight into a world that few know. Without explanation, it is hard to understand his emotion, and the ambiguity does not make it any
