A person’s morals can have a large impact on who they are. Their morals may contrast with those of others in society, making them redefine what it means to be a certain gender in that time period. In Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon it is revealed that one’s moral codes influence their contrasting roles in traditional society. One example of how this is shown is in the character development of Jen Yu and Yu Shu Lien. Initially Jen Yu is seen to be this quiet and well-refined, however towards the end of the movie she is seen to be a very independent and rebellious person. She learns more about herself and what she is, and is not, willing to do in life based upon what she sees as morally correct. As a result she is in contrast with both worlds that she is a part of, both that of the Chinese society and as a girl who knows how to fight. Secondly, Yu Shu Lien demonstrates the importance of morals on causing one to be different then most in society by being very close to her beliefs and moral compass. Throughout the movie, both of the characters learn to embrace their moral codes to their full extent, allowing for themselves to be who they truly are, even if it differs from the normal ways of the society in the traditional time.
