Elizabethan fashion was the start of fashion itself. This was the time of Christopher Columbus and other explorers who united the world. International trade routes had been discovered and global trade had officially began. Before the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, people just wore clothes to keep warm and to conceal themselves. Attire was plain and simple; it did not have flair or style. New fabrics and dyes were now readily available from all over the world. The Elizabethan Era was the first time the wealthy began to invest large sums of money and time into their clothing. Apparel distinguished the rich from the destitute. Both genders cared significantly about their clothing; it was not just a women’s hobby. The monarchs of the world during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries headed this new desire for gorgeous clothing, especially Queen Elizabeth herself. The Sumptuary laws were passed to keep certain styles specifically for the monarchs and nobility. The common people were prohibited from wearing those styles. The exquisite designs and shapes of clothing reflected the monarch’s influence on society and the novel Renaissance desire for a specific body shape; there were dissimilarities in attire among the people of different social classes due to the Sumptuary restrictions.
The clothing in which a character is dressed can tell so much story without having to say a word. The use of clothing and the colour of which in The Princess Bride (Robb Reiner, 1987), is indicative of each character’s motivations as well as alludes to the connection between them and their environments throughout the course of the film. The screenplay for The Princess Bride was written by William Goldman, who also wrote the book that provided the source material for the film. The fantastical mix between action and romance that is shown in The Princess Bride story, translates almost perfectly into a visual medium, despite the box office bumps along the way. Phyllis Dalton’s costume design mixed with Reiner’s directing, and Goldman’s screenplay,

On the twenty-first of August, our Wearable History class took a trip to downtown Bowling Green, to visit Mosaic Confinement Studio. The studio had an old-fashioned vibe, and was like a vintage-garment haven. There, we were asked to choose a piece that we thought was vintage, identify the time period it actually came from, and also take some additional notes on the style and the garment’s details. After searching through multiple racks, the first piece I found was a lace blazer. It turned out to only be vintage-inspired, so I went searching again. I came across a few other pieces, but nothing was really jumping out at me. Eventually, I came across a lavender dress that immediately made me think of Julia Roberts in “Mystic Pizza”, and I knew I found my garment.
The first museum, we entered was very small which was called “The Stockyard Museum” like a corner store size. This museum was based on historical events such as cowboys , native Americans, chisholm trails and the north/ stockyards of fort worth history. It was a beautiful Saturday morning on January 6. The winter air was crisp and the view was amazing. The soft salty scent from the ocean filled the air. Off the balcony on the second story of the Long Beach Yacht Club I could see the light swells of the Pacific Ocean. The small crashing of waves added to the peaceful instrumental background sounds as the ceremony was about to begin. January 6, my wedding date, was a day that changed the rest of my life.
Ceremonial Clothing is worn for indigenous dances, cultural festivals, and other special occasions, like the China Poblana, which means Chinese Pueblan in English. This outfit is known for its white shirt, shawl and wide, colorful dress. The origin of this costume goes back to the 19th century in a town in Mexico. The town is called Puebla and it is known to the world as the city where Mexico defeated the French on May 5, 1862 to eventually win its second independence and an Asian slave named Mirra (Lacy, “Traditions of Mexico” Par.1). It is believed she was living in India but pirates captured her when she was nine and sold her to a Pueblan merchant. Miguel de Sosa, who was a merchant, baptized Mirra the “Chinese girl” and gave her the Christian name Catarina de San Juan. After Sosa and his wife died, Catarina later attained her freedom and spent the remainder of her life in a convent passing away at the age of 82 in 1688. People can visit her tomb in the Templo de la Compañía in Puebla (donquijote, “Traditional Mexican clothing-Mexican clothes”). Unwilling to give up her traditional clothing, she continued to wear a sari, which inspired the China Poblana dress that is known today. It has evolved throughout time adding national symbols of Mexico, like the eagle clutching a snake, and a prickly pair of cacti. Woman who wear this dress tend to braid their hair on two sides, tied with red, white, and green ribbons.
