Star Wars episode IV follows this monomyth pattern perfectly. As a big fan of Star Wars, after learning about what the monomyth is, it showed itself so clearly in the movie. The movie starts out with young man buying protocol droids with his uncle. But little did he know that the purchase of those two droids would change his life forever. While cleaning the little R2 unit that he bought, he discovered a hidden message of a young woman asking for help. That is what breaks Luke's normal routine and eventually starts the Monomyth in the story. Later that day the droid that he bought escaped and went looking for Obi-Wan Kenobi and of course Luke had to go after it. It is something that is used in a lot of movies that we may not even realize such as: The Lion King, Aladdin, Spider-Man, Batman, The Karate Kid. The list goes on and on. It plays a bigger role in our film culture than we could have imagined. One of the strengths that it has is its relatability. It is easy for us as viewers to relate to the story. It makes us feel attached to it and eventually fall in love with it. One of its small drawbacks is that some might say it is repetitive. Because the list of movies that use the monomyth framework is so long, some might say that we are watching the same film over and over again. The ending of the film get predictable, the main character finds his unknown ability, fights the bad guys and succeeds, and then returns home and all is well. But there is another reason why the monomyth framework works so well in our society. As human beings, we also have to make decision like those in this monomyth framework. Sometimes we must venture out of our comfort zone and try new things, go to new places, and meet new people. Our ending might not turn out as those in the movies do, but these decisions are very necessary in our lives. We just have to decide if we will accept our
