Later on in the book Amir and Baba are forced to flee Afghanistan due to the Soviet-Afghan War, a nine year conflict that lasted from December 1979 until February 1989. They escape with a considerably large group of refugees who all sit in the “tarpaulin-covered cab of an old Russian truck” (110) On their journey they pass a checkpoint at Mahipar. There, the group is met by two soldiers, one Afghan, the other Russian. To the group’s dismay, the Russian soldier demands infidelity from a young woman riding in the truck. “Karim cleared his throat, dropped his head. Said the soldier wanted a half hour with the lady in the back of the truck” (115). Baba risks his own life to stop the temptation of the Russian soldier by asking him about his morals.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.

The novel Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding. Golding wanted the story to be about a group of young boys whose plane crashed on an island, trying to escape war. The whole concept of this was so that he can show what a group of people can become given a set of inflicting conflicts that can change them for better or for worst. He gives great detail on how they go from sane to insane in a matter of time and turn into someone completely different all together. One of the boys on the island is named Simon. Simon’s personality and traits are similar to Jesus Christ because they both posse a form of insight, spirituality, and compassion.

Even when Amir was nasty and cruel to him, he had always been a faithful, kind soul. He never doubted that Amir was his friend and that he held a special place in his heart. When Hassan got raped, Amir did not help Hassan. There were ultimately two options: step up to the bullies and rescue Hassan, or run away. Even after hearing Assef say how Amir would never do the same for him, about how he would never stand up for him, he still chose to run away and pretend like he did not just witnessed what had happend. There is also scene where Amir is feeling guilty and both the boys are around a pomegranate tree. Amir just starts pelting Hassan with pomegranates and threatens to him to throw one back. He exclaims, “You’re a coward,” (...). And what does Hassan do? He picks up a pomegranate, but instead of hurling it in Amir’s direction, he smashes it on himself and says, “are you satisfied?” (....). There is this constant pressure on Hassan and Amir’s relationship. The Afghan society would not approve of such “friendship.” Both of the boys were good, but Amir was so young when he made the mistakes that it made the reader question whether there was a way for Amir to be morally good again.

To begin, Baba’s life after fleeing his home of Afghanistan to America changes at its most critical aspects, one of these being his wealth. Back in Afghanistan Baba was known as very wealthy businessman in the Wazir Khan Akbar district. During Baba’s orphanage’s opening, Amir speaks about Baba’s success and his wealth: “But despite Baba’s successes, people were always doubting him. They told Baba that running a business wasn’t in his blood and he should study law like his father. So Baba proved them all wrong by not only running his own business but becoming one of the richest merchants in Kabul (Hosseini, 16). When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, Baba left the country through a people smuggler along with his son to Pakistan then America. Once in America, Baba lives a poorer lifestyle working as a gas station assistant manager opposed to his business career in Afghanistan. Amir gives insight on their American living conditions saying: “ Our grimy one-bedroom apartment smelled like dirty socks and cat droppings…Six days a week, Baba pulled twelve-hour shifts pumping gas, running the register, changing oil, and washing windshields…face drawn and pale under the bright...
Through relationships, individuals connect in different ways to overcome challenges and support one another. The sacrifices, lies and love strengthen their bonds. Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner displays the tensions that arise between families and friends. The image of tug of war can act as a metaphor for Amir and Baba’s relationship because it is a struggle between two people that are bonded by a rope to win control of something. The image represents Amir and Baba’s relationship because of their contrasting interests, Baba thinks Amir does not possess leadership qualities and Amir has to prove himself to Baba at the kite tournament.
While Baba attempts to live his life according to the Afghan saying, “Life goes on, unmindful of beginning, end.crisis or catharsis, moving forward like a slow, dusty caravan of kochis [nomads]” (Hosseini 356), Amir strays from this traditional perspective. Baba chose to continue his life unmindful of his past, while Amir, eventually decides to confront him. Although both Baba and Amir have acted immorally, the choices they make find redemption affect the success of their individual attempts. In the novel, Amir’s quest for atonement is more effective than Baba’s because he acts virtuously, while his father, acts selfishly. Ultimately, Amir is the more successful of the two because, in opposition to Baba, he seeks holistic atonement and is willing to make sacrifices to achieve redemption.
When Amir takes Baba to the doctors, the doctor suggests chemotherapy for Baba to prolong the cancer but Baba did not want any medication. Amir tells the reader, “He had the same resolved look on his face as the day he’d dropped the stack of food stamps on Mrs. Dobbins’s desk” (156). Baba did not want help even if his life was on the line. Baba also starts to take pride in Amir when he tells General Taheri, “Amir is going to ne a great writer,” Baba said. I did a double take at this” (139). Amir is starting to realize that his father who was untouchable and was a legend in Kabul was truly human. When Amir tells Baba that he wants to marry Soraya, Baba calls General Taheri to set up a meeting between the two men. As Amir dropped off Baba at the Taheri’s for the meeting, he says, “Baba was hobbling up the Taheri’s driveway for one last fatherly duty” (163). In this instance, Amir sees Baba as a true father. Amir feels Baba’s acceptance when Baba tells Amir on lafz, “It’s the happiest day of my life Amir” (166). First, Baba’s looming shame of his affair prohibits him from being a proper father to Amir and Hassan. Much like Amir has a friend who is as loyal as Hassan, Baba actually has a friend who is just as loyal to him and his name is Rahim Khan. Rahim Khan is Baba’s best friend and has been with Baba for as long as he can remember and one can see that he values their friendship through his loyalty to Baba through his word. One example is when Rahim Khan finally tells Amir the truth about the relationship between Hassan and Baba where we see Rahim’s Khans true loyalty. Rahim states, “Please think, Ami Jan. It was a shameful situation people would talk. All that a man had back then, all that he was, was his honour, his name, if people talked… we couldn’t tell anyone, surely you can see that” (Hosseini 233). Rahim Khan shows his loyalty to Baba by not proclaiming Baba’s misfortunate actions to the public. Rahim knew that if people were to find out about what Baba had done, all that he has worked for would be of no use anymore. The Orphanage, Baba’s name and the respect he receives from the people of Afghanistan would be worthless. A second example to present Rahim Khan’s loyalty is when Baba “sells” the house to Rahim Khan before him and Amir leave for Pakistan and eventually to America.
