American society emphasises individualism and freedom. Freedom is the ability to act, think, or speak without condemnation. Making choices that are for your benefit when planning your tomorrow, creates a dissonance when you feel pressure in making a decision to benefit the community. Living in tight, small communities can cause difficulty in making decisions where it might not benefit the community, but it benefits the individual. Freedom perceived as a positive aspect of people’s lives benefits peers. 39 percent of the world’s global population is not “free”. This means that they do not have freedom of religion, speech, life. Allen to show that positive attitudes are necessary for individual freedom to be possible within a community and the social circles within the communities. Freedom to make individual choices is crucial when in these communities because a single person’s choice affects the whole town. In order to create a welcoming community, differentiation in choices made by the citizens of that community creates a diverse group, which is appealing to many people. Sen’s studies have proved that American societies value individualism; however, in order to be in community with others, you must observe your choices and weigh out the positive and negatives to if the decision will affect yourself, along with the community. He provides evidence within his own town in Bengal, India. Sen mentions a time when Bengal worked together in their decision making in order to overcome the famine that struck the town. These individualized networking sites have also encouraged individualism. Social media has become a barrier to human relationships because people will deal with relationships through social media.
