The freedom of assembly, a term that means citizens have the right to gather in groups to protest policies and express their views in a non violent manner. This also means that anyone can join any group of people in an organization, and not be persecuted for it. As many know, this is part of the U.S. citizen’s first amendment rights, and has been for as long as the Constitution has stood over our country. Examples of these can include committees, pride parades, public protests, gangs, and even hate groups. This being said, why are some groups illegally persecuted, and others not? For example, what is the difference between what the Ku Klux Klan could do versus what any street gang. Gang. What is a gang? How long have American gangs been prominent? A gang, by definition, is an organized group of individuals who commit crimes either as a whole, or individually. American gangs and similar groups have been around for around 150 years. Some popular gangs in the United States include the “MS-13” gang that has an estimate of over 70,000 inactive and active members, the “Crips” with around 35,000 active members. These include neo-nazi groups, the infamous Ku Klux Klan, or any supremacist group. Today, they are spread fairly thin--with the KKK at a membership count of about 5,000 people. The KKK no longer lynch anyone who is not a white protestant, but rather they preach and spew hatred for others to hear. They stand for “the american way” and support “a clean and pure” society, according to a white knight membership website. Though, they may not be an organized crime group, it certainly does not mean that they are innocent of any crime, or are 100% crime free. The Klan may have never killed quite as many people as gangs have, but this certainly does not excuse them.
