This 2014 film of drama and emotion highlights the potential effects of Alzheimer’s disease in an individual’s life, as well as the support system that surrounds the individual. A linguistic professor and her family find their bonds tested when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (IMDb, n.d.). Alice Howland is happily married with three grown children as she receives the specific diagnosis of Early-Onset-Alzheimer’s disease (Rotten Tomatoes, 2018). Alice faces a struggle to stay connected to who she once was as well as recalling the important characteristics that make up her identity. A crucial scene that should not be unrecognized was when Alice told her husband that she wished she had Cancer. Alice explained that she wouldn’t feel so ashamed because people wear ribbons and go on walks to support the disease. This also underlines the stigma that follows Alzheimer’s because the imbalance between “physical” and “mental” illnesses is unbearable. For Alice, Alzheimer’s disease seems to be an invisible disease in her mind because people do not sympathize with it as opposed to other physical diseases such as Cancer, Heart disease, etc. It is very disheartening to recognize the negative connotations with mental illness as opposed to physical illness. In my opinion, these two illnesses are interlinked with one another in every situation within a person’s well-being or health. I felt very frustrated when Alice made this particular statement because any particular individual with a disease should feel the same support across the board. The inconsistencies in society do not help the individual’s, especially with Alzheimer’s, progress in any way due to the social isolation and negative
