Your Role as an Alumna Adviser The alumnae serving as members of Advisory Board advise and guide the chapter in all that it does. Advising is a gentle art. Characteristics of a Kappa adviser include a: Desire to work with college-age women. Willingness to devote time to guide, nurture and help the chapter members grow academically, socially, intellectually and individually as leaders. Belief in the Fraternity and its expectations and standards. Maturity with a strong sense of values, sound judgment and flexibility. Sense of humor.

If she left school before her class, the year her class graduated determines the beginning of the two-year requirement. She must be in good standing, having paid the per capita fee (i.e., annual dues) through the local alumnae association or through Dues Direct. She may not have a close relative (e.g., daughter, sister, granddaughter, etc.) in the chapter or about to go through Membership Recruitment in the chapter where she serves as adviser. She may not carry another Kappa responsibility at the same time (e.g., member of House Board, officer of the local alumnae association, Fraternity officer or chairman, etc.). Exceptions to the above may only be granted by the Advisory Board Specialist in consultation with the Advisory Board Director. Selection in Areas With an Alumnae Association In areas where there is an alumnae association, the procedure for selection of advisers is as follows. 1. Two members from the chapter, alumnae association, and current Advisory Board serve on a joint selection committee to recruit and recommend advisers. 2. The alumnae association President provides the committee with names of alumnae interested in advising. The alumnae association is responsible for informing its members of the duties and joys of advising and may survey its members to determine interest. Every alumnae association should maintain a file of names of members qualified and interested in becoming advisers. The Advisory Board …show more content…

The committee, using the recommendations and information submitted, makes a list of potential advisers and asks each whether she is willing to serve. The committee recommends a list of advisers to the executive board of the alumnae association and to the chapter for their approval. 7. The advisers are trained and installed. In developing this list, the committee should consider the qualifications of each potential adviser individually and in the context of the overall composition of Advisory Board. The committee should consider: Capable, mature, committed individuals. • Age diversity in the group. • Varied levels of chapter and Advisory Board experience. • Congeniality of the entire group. • Variety of chapters represented on the board. Selection in Areas Without an Alumnae Association In areas where there is no alumnae association: The joint selection committee is composed of two chapter members, two advisers and two alumnae if possible. The committee uses recommendations from the Advisory Board Chairman, Chapter Council and any other available lists to determine possible candidates. Advisory Board should maintain a file of names of interested alumnae with information about those alumnae. The Advisory Board Chairman may also ask alumnae associations Presidents in the surrounding area for names of interested alumnae. Various members of the chapter and Advisory Board should contact alumnae moving to town to give them an opportunity to meet the chapter members and
