Edgar Allan Poe alludes to his own alcoholism in his writing “The Tell-Tale Heart” by making himself the narrator. “I have been and am; but why will you say that I am mad” (1). In this quote the narrator speaks directly to the reader, showing one way to know that Poe is proven to be the narrator.
