There are many drug and alcohol treatment facilities today that all claim to have the best program for a successful recovery; however, treatment facilities focus more on addicts as a whole rather than individually. It would be beneficial to recognize introvert and extrovert addicts individually since they are drastically different both mentally and socially. Along with viewing introverts and extroverts as individuals, each personality type also needs to have their own unique treatment method because using the wrong treatment method can result in extreme damage to the addicts' recovery process. The treatment methods that recovery programs apply to addicts need to be specifically designed for the individual. In Buettner’s article, Are Extroverts Happier Than Introverts, published in Psychology Today, in his article Buettner states that researchers estimate extroverts are 50-74% of the population. In fact, according to many researchers, many drug and alcohol treatment facilities are established on the characteristics of extroversion, which makes sense due to the number of people that are extroverted. Majority of substance abuse treatment facilities are all based on the same techniques, such as psychoeducational groups, skills development groups, cognitive groups, support groups, and interpersonal process groups. What we are seeing here is treatment facilities are producing methods of treatment based on the extrovert personality because it is much simpler to design a program for a majority rather than a minority such as introverts. Since introverts are coerced to be a part of a treatment method that does not suit their needs, the method of treatment being used is more damaging to the introverts
