Which is why the Equal Pay Act of 1963 was written. Nowadays if you paid women less than men it would seem unfair. But back then you rarely saw women in the workforce which is one of the many reasons they did that. In today’s society all of women and outperform a man’s task and can sometimes do it even better. Women and evolving for the better and I think that it was a good idea that the Equal Pay act of 1963 was introduce to the world even though today some employers still tend to pay women less than men.
If instead, a company was deciding between a man and a woman candidate for a promotion, and was worried about its image as a sexist industry? Not to say that men are always better-qualified than women, or always passed-over for a position or promotion because the company wants to save-face, but unfortunately it does happen in our culture. Granted, women are still often the unfortunate victims of sexism in today?s society, being denied a job opportunity or equal pay because of their gender or because they are thought to be for example too fragile or too emotional for the applied position. But they do not believe that they should get equal pay. The initial argument is that women are needed in this world just as much as men are which is very true. Like in the article “The Gender Pay Gap Industry” by Catherine Rampell, it sh... ... middle of paper ... ...ingle moms out there that cannot pay some of their bills but the men can. That is absolutely embarrassing. They do not get the same and equal opportunities in life that they deserve just like the men.
This approach is somewhat objective because the person doing the hiring could have different views on the meaning of “competency.” Say, a man in a senior management position believes that women are somehow less intelligent or less able to succeed in top positions, he would automatically rule out women due to their “incompetency.” The responsibility to break these types of mindsets lies with the corporation. Where there is objectivity of terms, there should be detailed descriptions put in place of what they truly mean to the organization. Kantian View In Kantian terms, one can think about how people would react if their actions or beliefs were universalized. If the same manager mentioned above applied for a higher position and was denied by a woman who believed men to be incompetent, he would surely have a problem accepting that. Again, this confirms that it is morally unsound to discriminate based on gender.
One way is to pay everyone the same amount if it is the same job when they enter the job. Many women get paid one third less than men even if they are doing the same job. Also, many women do not get encouraged to continue with STEM fields from an early age, but men do, and that intimidates them because they might feel like they are not good enough for STEM fields jobs. Another way to fix these problems is by stopping all sexual harassment towards women. Men feel like they can take advantage of women because they are superior, but that is completely wrong.
Many studies in the past and present have shown that women do not get promoted as fast as men and do not get the equal pay for the same kind of jobs as men. Many females feel as if they have been cheated, robbed of what they deserve. Glass ceiling prevents women from moving up in their careers, and in some cases makes it almost unbearable to get a promotion. Females were considered to have lack of leadership skills. Therefore, they are less likely to be devoted to taking over the responsibilities at work. Moreover, social factors such as media-driven perceptions which strengthen the gender conception as men being experts in the work field and women lack in the male-dominated jobs such as business (Shin 1). Media drives the view of people towards women which became a social norm. People believe that men are more superior than women because of the media, it becomes the state of mind without any proven information that men are more preferred than women.
Not long ago women were treated unfairly due to the lack of equality laws. Women who were employed were often discriminated against by their employers and society. Today women are gaining equality, however a gender wage gap stills persists. Women are now holding jobs that were once only held by men. However, men are not very open to the idea and they often resent women who are beginning to work the same roles as men.
In addition, since women were not given the same opportunities that men were given, it is clear to see why women are not seen as “breadwinners”. Women are not paid the same amount as men are. It is an issue that affects everyone, and people have to realize that women are stronger, smarter and involved with the world much more than they were a half a century ago. The controversy with this issue however, is that many people don 't believe that women belong in high-powered positions. Many men believe that women aren 't aggressive enough and strong enough to handle the sometimes-high pressure that comes with some positions.
We believe that the corporations should apply affirmative action for a short period of time to have an equal playing field for women. Women are qualified but big corporations find it hard to hire women because of its untraditional method. That is why women should be forced into these jobs helping the majority in the end. Women bring many things that a man doesn’t bring to the business world including another viewpoint. This alone would help company’s compete better in the business world.
