After a long day of working I come home to find supper fixed and my wife waiting for me. She says she has been waiting for a while and she wonders what I’ve been doing. Of course I’ve been working on the farm and planting seeds before summer comes. I say that I’ve been working but she seems keen on thinking that I have been out seeing Abigail Williams again. Though I did have a thing for her when she was working in our house that is over now. I play it off and start eating supper but Elizabeth won’t let off about the situation. Elizabeth will not let it go, I was telling the truth. We have a long argument about how Elizabeth kicked out Abigail for a reason she will not tell me. This makes me mad in which I start shouting a little. Eventually Mary comes in and gives Elizabeth a poppet; I think nothing of it. Neither does Elizabeth until Hale comes in and starts to ask us questions. About us going to church and how faith we are to God. It starts to get a little suspicious and them he lets off. …show more content…

He them asks where she got it. Elizabeth answers with the truth; she never lies. She replies with “Mary gave it to me.” As she did, she made while waiting in the court house. Mary said she was sitting by Abigail Williams when she made the poppet. Danforth, one of the men that came inside the house, inspects the poppet and pulls out a long needle. Danforth reveals to all of us that Abigail Williams was stabbed by a needle in the stomach while eating supper. He then concludes that Elizabeth is a witch and has tried to kill Abigail by voodoo dolls. Obviously this is a lie and scheme by Abigail to try to kill my Elizabeth. Abigail is a selfish girl for doing this. She just wants Elizabeth out of the way to get to me; what a stupid and horrible idea. This will surely back fire on her part; she should have never done

They figure this out in Act Two when Mary Warren confesses to the poppet being hers and not Elizabeth’s. Furthermore, Elizabeth is a fervent Puritan woman. With that being said, she never lies because that to her is equivalent to murder or adultery. The only time that she ever thought to tell a lie was when she was doing her best to protect her husband in the court; unfortunately, what she did wasn’t the best choice she could’ve made. Moreover, Elizabeth is faithful with her husband, but that doesn’t stop her from continuing to not have trust in him. For example, in the beginning of Act Two, John mentions to her that he had been alone with Abigail. Without a doubt, that makes Elizabeth uncomfortable because she has a bit of an idea of what John was hiding from the public eye. In the stage directions, Arthur Miller prompts the reader to feel and sympathize with Elizabeth. For instance, in the same Act, it says that John goes to give her a kiss and she simply receives it. Mary put a needle into the doll, and Abigail used that for her accusation. She stabbed herself with a needle and claimed that Elizabeth's soul had done it. Although Abigail claimed she loved John, she may have just loved the care and attention he gave her. John cared for her like no one else had. In a way he could be described as somewhat of a father figure to her. When Abigail was just a child, she witnessed her parents' brutal murders. "I saw Indians smash my dear parent's heads on the pillow next to mine..." (page 20) After her traumatic experience, she was raised by her uncle, Reverend Parris, who is somewhat of a villain. In the play it was written, "He (Parris) was a widower with no interest in children, or talent with them." (Page 3) Parris regarded children as young adults who should be "thankful for being permitted to walk straight, eyes slightly lowered, arms at the sides, and mouths shut until bidden to speak." (Page 4) Therefore, it is obvious to see that Abigail grew up without any love or nurturing.
