AIDS and STD Education
Adults (over the age of 18) from the _________ company and other
peope who I know were randomly assigned to receive the survey. The
group includes married males and females as well as single male and
females. There are 19 female and 31 male subjects.
A survey consisting of twenty statements concerning sexually
transmitted disease and HIV infection. The survey was designed by
myself . The purpose of the survey is to measure participants
awareness of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. I am trying to
show that people are not well informed about subjects such as condom
use, condom use and alcohol, transmission of sexual diseases, and the
magnitude of the AIDS problem. Subjects are asked to choose the level
with which they agree or disagree with each statement. There are two
levels of agreement and two levels of disagreement. See appendix A. A
consent form was signed by all participants. See appendix B.

Maya Angelou, more formally known as Marguerite Ann Johnson was born on April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the child of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter Johnson. When Maya was three years old, her parents got divorced. After they divorced, she and her older brother, Bailey Jr., were sent to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. They were not sent in a normal fashion, however. Angelou and her brother were placed on a train by themselves by their father. Their father then put a tag on each of them that said “To Whom It May Concern, send these two to Stamps, Arkansas.” With only each other for support, Angelou and her brother made their way to Stamps. In Stamps, their grandmother Annie Henderson owned a general store. While in Stamps, Angelou was subjected to a great deal of racism and discrimination because she was an African American. She grew up during a time where there was an unequal status between blacks and whites. Throughout her whole time in Stamps her grandmother helped her develop a strong sense of self so that she could withstand those racist times they lived in. Her grandmother knew that if she could help Angelou understand who she is and what she stood for, then none of those racist people could get to her.
In the growing community where I reside in northern Colorado, the population is a mix of Euro-Americans and Mexican-Americans. Therefore, the majority of clients entering into agencies in the community would be of these populations. The issues foreseen would be communication concerns, even though, the child speaks English the parents may not or it may be limited. With this knowledge as a professional counselor, it is the responsibility of the professional to educate themselves on the culture of the clientele in their community. Much of Wundt's work was put down around the mid 20th century in the United States because of a lack of satisfactory translations, misrepresentations by different students, and the behaviourists' problems with the structuralists' program. Titchener was one of Wundt's most voiced advocates in the United States. He is also responsible for various translations and mistranslations of Wundt's work which supported his own views. This approach he called "structuralism" and claimed that it was completely in alignment with Wundt's position. Titchener who focussed on the internal structures of the mind as well, was rejected by behaviorists who would have followed the ideas of B. F. Skinner, which were a part of the latter dominated psychological studies in the mid 1900s. In the later decades, his positions and techniques had seen reconsideration and reassessment by major psychologists. The creation of the psychology lab in 1879 was seen by most modern psychologists to had established psychology as a separate field of study with its own methods and questions. Wilhelm Wundt's support of the method of experimental psychology also set the stage for future behaviourism and many of his experimental methods are still used today in modern psychology. Some psychologists may also disagree that 1879 was not the year that psychology began as an independent discipline. Psychologists may say that psychology began back in the time of the ancient Greeks such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. These philosophers looked at various psychological aspects such as the inner man, and focussed on it as separate from philosophy.
The novel’s young protagonist first loses her sense of self during early childhood as a result of her constant self-comparison to White people. In this autobiography, Angelou refers to herself by her full name, Marguerite Ann Johnson. Maya (in the novel Marguerite Johnson) first shows her discontent of her skin when she puts on her silk Easter dress hoping to resemble a movie star and “look like one of the sweet little white girls who were everybody’s dream of what was right in the world” (Angelou 2). Maya Angelou’s life began in the small town of Stamps. At the age of three Maya and her Brother, Bailey, were dropped off at their grandmother’s house in Stamps by their parents. Maya lived her life as a store helper to her grandmother, Momma, and her uncle Willie. Her childhood was occupied by managing the store, going to school, and participating in cultural events. Maya’s went through many obstacles in her childhood such as the rape, desertion, and self discovery. Maya uses her relationships with other people to help her overcome the obstacles in her life.

Psychology started, and had a long history, as a topic within the fields of philosophy and physiology. It then became an independent field of its own through the work of the German Wilhelm Wundt, the founder of experimental psychology and structuralism. Wundt stressed the use of scientific methods in psychology, particularly through the use of introspection. In 1875, a room was set-aside for Wundt for demonstrations in what we now call sensation and perception. This is the same year that William James set up a similar lab at Harvard. Wilhelm Wundt and William James are usually thought of as the fathers of psychology, as well as the founders of psychology?s first two great ?schools? Structuralism and Functionalism.
