A Modest Proposal
by Araceli Pedraza
There is a terrible problem going on within our growing society of intellectuals, the abusers of books, or cool kids . People who fold the pages, tear them out, or those who fold back the books, breaking the binding, its precious spine, for more 'comfortable' reading. Even those who claim that books are dumb, too long, or a waste of time, it simply makes that person look uneducated and seem way to obnoxious.
My proposal, to decrease the ever growing population of book abusers, is to remove the eyes of such humans. Removing the eyes of those who ruin the reading experience of others, 1those who claim that books are dumb then see how much reading is actually important, and when reading books that’s

The second warning involves the removal of an eye, and the final consequence is the removal of the second eye.
Although, those who do receive the final consequence, could learn Braille, for what reason, I don’t know. Another option is to listen to someone read to them, 2if they finally realize that reading a book that hasn’t been ruined is actually fun. The rest who don’t care, will carry on, living their life as a blind, book abuser. 3Those who ruin books, ruin more than a hundred and fifty books a year. 4This is not counting magazines, articles, documents, and short stories. A hundred and fifty books, 5 6not counting those long messages and emails nobody cares about.
As those who don’t treat books right are removed, or excluded, there will be less uneducated people in society, creating a smarter group of people, and the books will be in way better condition, libraries would return to their clean, and beautiful state. The amount of spoilers would decrease immensely. 7Why have eyes if not to
An Oxford University graduate, Jonathan Swift, in his article, A Modest Proposal, proposes a solution to Irelands growing poverty in the 18th century by proposing the selling and eating of innocent babies. Swift’s purpose is to state the benefits that the poor would gain from selling their one year old children to the wealthy to eat them. He takes on a concerning tone in order to convince the people of Ireland to consider and adopts his obscene plan.
Imagine a society just like ours now only books were banned. You could never own one, read one, or have one. If you ever had a hope of reading you would have to memorize all the books you wanted to keep. the rest of the books would be burned never to be read again. The book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is about a society where your imagination of having no books is true. People protest by memorizing books in hopes of one day being able to read again. If I had to memorize a book I would memorize The ugly duckling by Hans Christian Andersen.
The essay Staying Awake by Le Guin agrees with the NEA essays to a point, but she takes a different approach to present her essay, she also does not believe the reading decline to be as much of a gloom and doom situation as the NEA essays do, her thesis statement is “I want to question the assumption that books are on the way out. I think books are here to stay. It’s just not that many people ever did read them.’’(Le Guin p34) She says that readers have never been in the majority so why should that change now? (Le Guin p 34) Le Guin uses history as her background data she refers to the “century of the book,’’ (Le Guin p34) which was the peak of our reading abilities after that period of time the reading decline began. Being literate equals having control and separates the people who have power and control from those who do not. While the NEA essa...
Books are worthless in there society and it is taking up to much space and it is wasting to much resources to make them. If you are caught with, a book they would go to your house
Originating from Oxford College in England, Jonathan Swift, in his article A Modest Proposal, tells of a solution to end all poverty and hunger in the country of Ireland. Swift's purpose is to present a solution that relieves the parents of burdensome children, adds income, and solves the current issues of the country. He adopts a serious tone in order to convince the audience of Irish folk to think about his "modest proposal".
James Howe once said, “Banning books is another form of bullying. It’s all about fear and an assumption of power. The key is to address the fear and deny the power.” This quote means that depriving people from the knowledge in books is an additional way of bullying, and proves that there might be possibility for change which certain people are afraid of. Some people would agree with this quote because to deprive someone from acquiring the knowledge that is stored on book. This relates to Candide by Voltaire because this book was banned because of its controversial content. The banning of this book limited the knowledge of the time period and how the challenges religion and governments had.
How would the world without books, in a world where we are controlled by technology. We might already be even more to the point where our kids are taken away from us and we don't mind. In a world where suicide becomes normal. Well this is the world of Clarisse Montag's wife. Montag is a fireman who literally burns houses for a living, in his society that's what a fireman does for a living instead of saving lives, he burned houses but only if the people who live there have books. People don't know what they have lost, and they don't realize it either.
Andrew Solomon has some valid arguments in his article, and he tries to persuade the readers through logos, pathos, and ethos. Solomon wants the readers to understand the importance of reading, and how its decline can be harmful to the nation. To reinforce his arguments, Solomon shares a variety of examples, for instance, he mentions that reading helps improve memory and concentration, and the decline of reading is causing mental “atrophy.” He also calls upon the readers to take some sort of action to raise reading rates and help the society. This can grant the readers a form of power and control over the crisis that will lead to an em...
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. It is possible that I will learn more about society through literature than I ever will through personal experience. Having lived a safe, relatively sheltered life for only seventeen years, I don’t have much to offer in regards to worldly wisdom. Reading has opened doors to situations I will never encounter myself, giving me a better understanding of others and their situations. Through books, I’ve escaped from slavery, been tried for murder, and lived through the Cambodian genocide. I’ve been an immigrant, permanently disabled, and faced World War II death camps. Without books, I would be a significantly more close-minded person. My perception of the world has been more significantly impacted by the experiences I've gained through literature than those I've gained
If society is left without books, a population will become homogenous and without knowledge. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag wants to find his true meaning of life through books. Books are so revered that Montag must hide his books to avoid punishment. This proves that the government does not want the general populous to read literature because it is so valuable. Ideas cannot be taken away once committed to the brain.

All in all, throughout our society ideas, morals, and lessons are thought through books and if books are being banished from our schools, then we are all being deprived of our freedom as intellectuals that have the own opinions and ideas. In fact if books teach students lessons and if this books are abolished then lessons, ideas and real events of the real world are also banished from students. After all, who is the right person to censor book?
Having a world without books would include information being hidden from the entire population, censorship being placed upon all printed material, and people not being able to read books for recreation or education. A society may prompt to ban books and other forms of written material because they want to hide information from their citizens. Books often include topics, such as rebellion, murder, and other illegal activities, that the government does not want presented to the population. Taking away books would restrict people from gaining access to new ideas, since much of what people
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
Instead of spending time on internet and other sources of e-media and causing harm to our eyes and health, we should read books for our mental activity.
