According to Joseph Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Everyone imagines heroes differently. Heroes do not always have to have supernatural abilities. They can simply be regular people who make a difference in someone’s life. Peeta, from the Hunger Games Trilogy, is a hero in his own way. Peeta was just a regular young man until he was forced to go into the arena and fight until the death on live television. Peeta did not know the effect he was going to have. Peeta gave people hope and faith. Peeta did not try to become a hero, but the choices he made are what led him to be known as a hero. When Peeta was a child, he saw Katniss Everdeen for the first time at school. He immediately had a crush on her. Peeta had many differ skills. Thehungergames.wikia.com states that Peeta has five main skills: baking, painting, speaking, camouflage and strength. Since Peeta was the son of a baker, he was very fond of baking. That was where his painting abilities came from. Peeta would help his parents decorate cakes and other pastries. Peeta, also, had great speaking skills. He could always get people to like him and make them feel at ease. He was good at using nature around him to camouflage him. One time in the arena, he painted himself to blend in with some leaves so that no one around would see him. Peeta, who placed 2nd place in a District 12 wrestling match, was strong from working in the bakery with his parents. One can see from this article that Peeta has a lot of different skills. When Peeta and Katniss got to District 11, Peeta made a speech to Rue’s family then offered her family a share of his earning each year. That was something that had never been done before. He felt the need to give them the money because she was too young to have died but also because she was Katniss’s ally. Everything Peeta did was for Katniss. According to Kendra Cherry, “people who rush in to help others in the face of danger and adversity do so because they genuinely care about the safety and well-being of other people” (2). Peeta could always see the bigger picture. Peeta knew that Katniss could make a different and could bring the Capitol down. He was willing to do anything it took for Katniss, including die for her. He never compromised who he was in the games. Heroes are people who act with dignity under pressure.
