Lance Retuyan November 04, 2015 EN210-01 Professor Madison “A Good Man is Hard to Find” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor is a short story about a family, a grandmother, her son, along with his wife and two kids, going on a family road trip. The grandmother did not want to go to Florida because there is an individual named “The Misfit” that is on the loose. Instead, she wanted to take a trip to Tennessee in efforts to visit some of her connections. In O’Connor’s short story, the Misfit and the grandmother are two completely different people, entirely opposite of each other. The grandmother is a sweet old lady who always gets her way; she can be very subtly convincing. She has a way of manipulating people without really trying. The original plan was to go to Florida, but the grandmother was able to somehow convince her son and grandchildren otherwise by informing them about The Misfit on the loose. She was also an optimist; she was full of joy, carefree, and tries to see the good in people. We learn these characteristics during their way to their destination. She explains to her grandchildren the beauty of nature that they encounter, and shares her memories about these landmarks. We also learn that she becomes a tad selfish when she runs across The Misfit because she did not care to beg for her family’s lives. The Misfit however, is a bit strange, someone who has no conscience. There is no sign of emotion as he kills the lives of the grandmother and her family. If you carefully analyze the story, we may observe that he may be misunderstood. He says that he does not know why he was put away; despite the fact they had papers to prove it. We also observe his dose of Christianity as he talks about Jesus. His character can be a bit misleading when you first encounter his dialogue because even though we know his not a good person, we have a bit of hope that he is going to spare the grandmother’s
