A Good Leader In George Orwell's Animal Farm

Arnold H. Glasow once said “A good leader takes a little more of his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit” This is a key component to being a strong leader but there are also many other vital qualities of leadership. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm the farm animals unite under the guidance of the pigs Old Major, Squealer, Snowball, and Napoleon. The plot however; revolves around the farm animals establishing Animalism and learning how to adjust to their new way of life on the farm. Although Boxer and Snowball are both potential leaders who possess dedication and are hardworking, ultimately their differences demonstrate to the reader that Snowball is a better leader because of his combined dedication, extreme intelligence, …show more content…

It is these differences that ultimately make Snowball the stronger leader. Snowball is intelligent and is able to make good decisions for the farm whereas Boxer doesn’t have the same intellectual ability. “Snowball now launched his second line of attack, Muriel, Benjamin, and all of the sheep”(41) Snowball made a strategic plan of attack during the Battle of the Cowshed this shows that he is very intelligent and was smart enough to come up with this elaborate plan. “Four legs good, two legs bad”(48) Snowball understood that sme of the other animals were not as intelligent, he reduced the commandments down to a single precept so that every animal will understand the farm’s philosophy. This was an extremely smart decision because now every animal can truly understand the rebellion and what Animalism is all about. On the other hand Boxer is not nearly as intelligent and this hurts his ability to make good decisions and lead the other animals. “Napoleon is always right”(56) Boxer does not have the most complex mind and can only think in slogans. Boxer could not get beyond the letter D of the alphabet this shows that his ability to comprehend things was lacking.
