Halloween: A Short Story: Spookley, A Ghost

Every night on Halloween, Spookley had to sit upstairs in the attic and watch through the window at all of the other kids who got to go out and trick-or-treat. Unfortunately, for Spookley, he couldn’t go out and trick-or-treat. Spookley was a ghost. He had never gone trick-or-treating in his entire life. This year, however, was different for Spookley. Spookley had come up with this idea one day when the kids who lived in the bottom half of the house had been getting their costumes ready. Spookley had mastered the art of walking around downstairs without being seen or heard by the humans. The boy said, “Mom, can we put the spider that jumps out at you right here on the porch?” “No, I don’t like that spider. It’s scary,” said the little girl. The two kids continued to argue until their father stopped them and said, “Okay! Here’s what we’re going to do. We will put the spider on the porch, but your sister gets to pick the next two decorations.” So, the boy put the spider on the porch, and the girl started digging through a box with decorations in it. She pulled out a smiling ghost, with a purple ribbon tied around it’s neck, and she hung it off of a tree branch. Spookley could practically feel the lightbulb come on over his head. He went back upstairs, and found an old white sheet that the boy used when he was a baby. Spookley draped it over his head, and looked in the mirror. You still couldn’t tell what he was supposed to be. So he got into the “Art Supplies” box, and obtained a bottle of black paint. He used an ancient tennis ball to put two black dots in place of eyes.
