A Doll's House: Nora Perceived by Other Characters
In the Victorian age many woman were thought of as mere objects. Most
woman has no real social status and were not allowed to express themselves
freely. A Doll's House, a play by Henrik Ibsen, has brought controversy to the
conclusion in which Nora leaves her family. Nora perceived in many different
ways is the catalyst that forces Nora to leave her family. Many people had
found it difficult to understand how Nora could dessert her husband and children.
In the Victorian Age it was not only unheard of to walk out on your loved ones
but unethical as well. There are many incidents that inch by inch helps Nora
come to the conclusion that she must leave her home and family. As Nora states "
My first duty is to myself" (Ibsen 68 ). Her husband, Torvald, treats Nora more
as a possession then an equal partner. He uses, manipulates and molds her to
fit perfectly into his facade. Krogstad, a morally diseased man who works for
Torvald, also uses Nora to gain a higher position at work. He believes herto be
an easy target for blackmail. Nora's best childhood friend, Christine Linde,
helps her realize that a woman can think, act and live independently for herself.
As Nora realizes that she must find her true self, the ways in which Krogstad,
Christine and Torvald perceive her dramatically change.
Christine Linde, a woman who has had to live independently since her
husband died, suddenly comes back to visit Nora and finds Nora has not changed
from her childish ways in high school. Nora for an instant does not recognize
her old friend because of the time that has passed since the last time she saw
her. Christine tells Nora of her husband's passing and how he did not leave her
any money or "even any sorrow or grief to live upon" (Ibsen 6). She tells Nora
how she had to marry him because of her ailing mother and two younger brothers.
She needed someone who could take care of her and her family financially. Now
she is on her own and looking for a job to support herself. Nora expresses her
sympathies and promptly brags about Torvald's promotion at the bank. She is so
excited at the importance of his job and more importantly the money that will
begin to start pouring in. Nora thinks it will be wonderful not having to worry
about money and being able to shop at any time for a...

receives Krogstad's second letter and restores her to her
status as delicate possession she recognizes the he is once again
trying to cut off her change to grow and become involved in the
world (Hornby 100).
In effect Torvald alienates Nora into leaving her home and her family.
The ways in which Torvald, Christine and Krogstad perceive her all had a
direct effect on Nora's leaving Torvald. Christine at first thought Nora to be
childish but then realizes it was just an act she played to fit in Torvald's
facade. She learns that even though Nora always had someone to take care of her
she has had to struggle internally with who she really is and how she acts.
Krogstad along with Torvald both use and manipulate Nora for their own
advantages. Both cared nothing about her thoughts or feelings. Throughout the
play Nora begins to realize that she no longer wants to play Torvald's role
anymore. Torvald's failure to take the blame on himself is when Nora finally
realizes she must find herself because she can not continue to live in the
facade world that Torvald put her in.

Nora, characterized as a benevolent and strong person, left her husband to explore the beliefs in society and to interpret ideas herself. Unlike Nora, the belligerent, selfish Hedda destroyed the lives of people around her just to take her own life in the end. Even though it appeared that Nora abandoned all responsibility for her children and hid an insidious secret from her husband, Nora showed greater fortitude than Hedda in the way she faced the obstacles of her life. Nora is the pampered wife of an aspiring bank manager Torvald Halmer. In a desperate attempt to saves her husband's life Nora once asked for a loan so she and her family could move somewhere where her husband could recover from his sickness. Giving the circumstances she, as a woman of that period, by herself and behind her husband forged her dad signature to receive the loan. Now, Nora's lender (Mr. Krogstad), despite her paying punctually, uses that fault as a fraud to pressure her so she could help him to keep his job in the Bank where her husband is going to be the manager. Nora finds out that Torvald would fire Mr. Krogstad at any cost. At learning this, Nora trembles for she knows Mr. Krogstad will tell everything to Torvald. She remains confident; however that Torvald will stand by her no matter what outcome. His reaction though is not what she expected and therefore here is when she realizes that she "must stand quite alone" and leaves her husband.
This becomes one of the main driving forces of Ibsen’s play. (Quote from Torvald and the money). It immediately distinguishes the differences in gender roles and morals in Norway during the late 1800’s. While Nora is willing to give the porter twice what is owed, we assume she is full of holiday spirit; Torvald has a much more sensible outlook on financial concerns. While he jokingly calls her his little spendthrift, he asserts that her lack of understanding is a result of her gender “Nora, my Nora, that is just like a woman” (Ibsen). Torvald believes that her place in the home is simply ornamental, a trophy that serves as decoration for his home. Torvald is constantly referring to her through the use of pet names such as (quote pet names from book) and only ever refers to her by name when he is scolding her. Not only does Torvald see her as his doll, but also as her child (quote near end of story). By keeping Nora dependent and obedient to him, he plays the role of Nora’s second father. As we look at the character change in Nora, we see two different sides to her. The beginning of the play reveals a woman totally dependent on her husband for everything,. It isn’t until the end of the play that she realizes she can be herself and she doesn’t have to depend on her husband. Nora realizes “that if she wants an identity as an adult that she must leave her husband’s home” (Drama for Students 112). By examining Nora, we see from Ibsen’s theme that if we ignore all the expectations the social world has for a person, our true selves can be revealed.

Role play is a big part of “A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen because all the characters pretend to be someone there not instead of being their selves. The one who stands out the most though is Nora. It’s almost like she lives two different lives because of how differently she acts. Nora is claimed to be Torvald’s childish, loving wife and is unknowingly a strong, independent woman. She was known as the playful, trophy wife by everyone at the beginning of the play, but as the play goes on she is shown as a self-empowering, eager woman.
In the play " A Doll's House", written by Henrik Ibsen, Nora, the main character of the play, decides to abandon her husband, her home and her children in order to find herself. She finally realizes she has to leave when confronted with a problem in her relationship with her husband, who keeps treating her like a doll, reflecting the childish treatment she always received from her father before. She finds the strength to leave with her childhood friend Kristine, who has led a hard life, and has the wisdom to guide and support her. Ibsen in his "A Doll's House" depicts the role of women as subordinate in order to emphasize their role in society. Nora is oppressed by the manipulation from Torvald. Torvald has a very typical relationship with society. He is a smug bank manager. With his job arrive many responsibilities. He often treats his wife as if she is one of these responsibilities. Torvald is very authoritative and puts his appearance, both social and physical, ahead of his wife that he supposedly loves. Torvald is a man that is worried about his reputation, and cares little about his wife's feelings.
Torvald is the only one in the family who works and provides for his family who needs to survive in their lifestyle. Because of this, Nora must always go and ask for money from Torvald, hoping for his acceptance of her using his income. Nora’s very first impression to her readers would of a responsible, obedient, money loving and a very childish wife. In the first act of the play audience would realize that all Nora wants is money from her husband Torvald. A act was describe when the two characters finally meets in the play and there was time when Nora was showing what she got for her kids for Christmas and when she was asked what she wants for Christmas all she answered was money. It was hard to eliminate the way Torvald especially addressed Nora it seemed as if though she was a little girl or even his pet. “My little lark mustn’t droop her wings like that. What? Is my squirrel in the sulks?” (Ibsen 842).
A contrasting difference in the characters, are shown not in the characters themselves, but the role that they play in their marriages. These women have different relationships with their husbands. Torvald and Nora have a relationship where there is no equality. To Torvald Nora is an object. Hence, she plays the submissive role in a society where the lady plays the passive role. Her most important obligation is to please Torvald, making her role similar to a slave. He too considers himself superior to her.
As the play goes on, Nora seems to transform from her delicate little character into something much more. At the end of act one, Krogstad goes to Nora for the recollection of the money she had borrowed from him. "You don?t mean that you will tell my husband that I owe you money?" (21). Since Nora was wrong in doing so socially, she could not tell Torvald or anyone else about her problem. Not only would that affect their social standard but also Torvald's ego, which inevitably would happen anyway. She now sees that she is a human being before she is a wife and mother and she owes herself to explore her personality, ambitions, and beliefs.
