It is captivating, the thought of being able to have something no one else could. This read explores the possibilities of how those events might play out. In the award winning novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mr. Hyde’s ominous, mysterious nature intrigues the curious Dr. Jekyll as Hyde allows Jekyll to lead a double life void of consequences, live the gift of youth once again, and indulge in vile pleasures. Upon the discovery of his alter ego, the doctor explored the possibilities and limits of his power. “I was the first that could thus plod in the public eye with a load of genial respectability and in a moment, like a schoolboy, strip off these lendings, and spring headlong into a sea of liberty.” (46). His use of Mr. Hyde’s body allowed him to feel younger in both in body and spirit once more. His feelings regarding his new person are described as follows: “There was something strange in my sensations, something indescribably new and, from its very novelty, incredibly sweet.” (44). Ironically, the doctor’s age did not differ greatly from that of Hyde’s, but it was the fresh, new body that deceived Jekyll into thinking he was once again young. The illusion of youth did not only develop as a result of the new body, but as a product of the daring, vulgar acts Hyde committed. “The old gentleman took a step back, with the air of one very much surprised and a trifle hurt; and at that moment Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds, and clubbed him to the earth.” (14). It is known that Jekyll would never associate himself with an act such as this, much less partake in one. But, the body of Hyde allowed him the “thrill” of performing dangerous feats. However, this adventure did not last long and as Hyde, with no true moral values or purpose, once again began to feel his true age set
