The 90s: Changing Politics The 90’s are well known for several political fiascos and accomplishments. Economies around the world were beginning to change. There have been scandals and backtracks on statements involving politicians that have occurred; many politicians have been overwhelmed by controversy. Some politicians had to run away from dangerously negative labels. Political change was an admirable trait among the most famous politicians. There has been turmoil in unstable regions. 90’s politics caused change in the U.S. and global economy, U.S. politics, and global warfare. 90’s politics caused change in the U.S. and global economy. politics. In the 90’s, Bill Clinton had to separate himself from liberals. Clinton did not identify as a liberal because many Americans viewed liberals as people that are weak on crime and defense and prefered high taxes and high spending (Savage). People in the U.S. wanted to move away from liberal politics in the 90’s. Bill, however, was able to separate himself from liberal politics through a variety of methods. Clinton identified as a new Democrat who wanted to be a clear Centrist (Ochoa 68-69). Clinton was willing to create a new side of politics that rejected some of the more extreme elements of the right and left. He occasionally compromised between right-wing conservative ideas and left-wing liberal ideas. Bill Clinton’s compromising between conservatives and liberals was known as triangulation (Savage). U.S. politics moved more towards a centrist viewpoint. Some people in the U.S. opposed such centrism. Republicans opposed Clinton and felt like the media was being unfair. Conservatives accused the mainstream media of having a liberal bias (Ochoa 69). Conservatism in the U.S. also became more present as a result of this. Conservatives created the Fox News network in 1996 as an alternative to mainstream media. It became a major news network very quickly and had a huge conservative bias (Ochoa 69). Conservatives in the U.S. were able to get their viewpoint across on television due to Fox News. However, due to conservative opposition to Clinton’s moderate policies, Clinton portrayed conservatives as extremists. Most Americans agreed with Clinton’s assessment of Republicans as far right and unreasonable people (Savage). Americans overwhelmingly liked Clinton’s new moderate policies over more extremist policies. As a result, George W. Bush advocated for “compassionate conservatism” as a more cooperative and less extreme alternative to the conservatism during the 90’s (Savage).
