The short stories are "7th Grade" by Gary Soto and "Pink Hat" by Caroline Bond Day. Both stories represent that you should be who you are. Gary Soto wrote a memoir called, “A Summer Life.” In a memoir, being yourself, and telling your own story are all important. They are important because you don’t want to lie and say you like something if you don’t. Speaking freely is telling how you really feel and not caring what other people think about it. And telling your own story is very important because the story is suppose to be about you not anyone else.

A person’s character is what makes them who they are. It is the foundation of personality, words, and actions, and it grows with every trial in an individual’s life. Personal struggle develops character because it brings to light what a person will and will not do, allows them to find or develop talents, it creates an opportunity to alter their mindset, and the experience gained will stay with the individual forever.
The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this character in the memoir to show the readers the relationship between Jack and Dwight.
When I was younger, and didn’t realize that being biracial was something different, friends made me feel like I didn’t really belong. I know now that that is not the case, and that being different is a good thing. I’ve learned that I am not half a person, and this has taught me not to “judge a book by it’s cover”, because the way people look doesn’t define who they are. I’ve also learned to be more open-minded to new cultures because that is what I’ve been exposed to. Horatio Alger, “Who Shall Win, A Story of School Life” , gives an example of what it means to have very little sources, but with the help of friends, one can end up winning through the story of two schoolboys in a competition. The Principal of the Oakland Classical Academy encouraged his students in the field of English composition by holding an essay contest. The price would be honor and $10. Two students seemed to have chances of winning; Julian Holmes and Harry Carter. Julian comes from a prominent background; his father is a lawyer that allows for a comfortable living. Harry, on the other hand, comes from complicated background; living with his widowed mother causing him to working for the school in menial acts to pay for his tuition. These boys indeed are competitors. Besides the original price, additional offerings were made to both students. When they shared what they wrote for the competition, both knew who the clear winner of the essay competition was, Julian. Julian offers Harry the price money (assuming that it was all his only desired from the competition, since winning would mean that his father would get him a row-boat); however, Harry declined the offer as he shared what his real purpose of winning (win the $10 that could help his mother, but also to get a job). Julian deliberately dipped his pen in ink and dropped a large blot on his essay. The day in which they announced the winner of the essay competition, the judges revealed Harry as the winner. Harry then understood what had happened. As Julian went back home, his father was angered as the carelessness of Julian, but Julian shared with his father the reason why he was so “careless”. Back in 1990, a man named Gary Soto decided to write an autobiography about himself, titled A Summer Life. One of the more interesting portions of the book was when Mr. Soto described a summer day back when he was six years old. On that day, young Gary found out what it felt like to be a true sinner, as he stole an apple pie from the local bakery. Some readers found this as one of the more interesting parts, not because of the plot, but because of the literary devices used, such as detail, imagery, and pacing. The three aforementioned literary devices are almost a backbone to the story, because without those three, the story would be shortened and fairly bland. The following three paragraphs will each describe a literary devices used by Mr. Soto to enhance the quality of his story.

In the “Jacket” by Gary Soto, illustrates the theme of alienation by showing his depression through an ugly green jacket which he subsequently thinks everyone doesn’t like him for. In the beginning of the story the main character which I assume to be Soto, describes how big of an effect a jacket has on a kid in a school. “I remember the green coat that I wore in fifth and sixth grade when you either danced like a champ or pressed yourself against yourself a greasy wall, bitter as a penny towards the happy couples.” This is a great way to start out the story right into it they’re setting the point of how important having a nice jacket in this school is. Growing up, I’ve always valued friendships. Friends were as important to me as family. I’ve attended Catholic school from first grade through eighth grade. My classmates were the same 35 people throughout grade school. I went through many hardships and obstacles trying to find peers who were similar to me. In 6th grade, I went through identity crisis to find out who I was. Before that, I was constantly changing myself so that I could fit in and be like others. In “School is Bad for Children”, John Holt discusses the faults and failures of the education system. According to Holt traditional schooling stifles children’s curiosity and learning, causing them to be ill-equipped as adults. He believes children are smarter before they enter school, having already mastered what he says is the most important thing, language. Holt goes on to describe how children no longer learn for themselves in school. Their learning has become a passive process. Children then come to realize teachers are not there to satisfy their curiosity, and in turn, grow ashamed and accept what they think teachers wants them to believe. School also becomes a place where uncertainty and incorrect answers are forbidden. The students learn how to cheat and pretend to work when the teacher is looking.
