In this essay I will be talking about the most effective habits I found helpful. While reading the book it was able to show me how to better improve the following skills: Leadership, team building, and my own personal growth. Before going on, the book did state that the change does Start within you. When first reading the book, it spoke about how using the 7 habits that the book would be speaking about along the way will better self improve myself. The first habit was about being Proactive which meant that effective people make a decision to make their lives better, through things that they are able to influence, rather than having to deal with outside forces. When reading this, I re-read the chapter over once more to have a better understanding …show more content…
During my years at Harvest Middle School my mental concept was always to win, be the best, have the best grades. But once I entered High School and into a whole new different type of environment, everything just went down from there. My grades slipped, the procrastinating was getting out of hand, and I didn’t take my studies serious. When reading about Habit 4: Think win/win it came to me like if I was thinking about contest, and I had to win. But when looking carefully at it and at how this habit could’ve improved my skill, it just made more sense to me in my head, instead of thinking about it like a game. Why not make all my assignments, leadership, my job, team building, and for me personally a contest. Keep doing the right thing, never look back at the failures, and never give up until the very end. When I had this mental concept, I noticed a change instantly, I told myself that I have to sit down and do the work, don’t get off task, keep focus. Before I knew it, I was passing all my other classes
The book I read was called The seven habits of highly effective people” by Stephen Covey and it was so inspirational to me personally that it made me rethink my own mental concept of how I was doing everything. The book itself after reading it, made me want to improve my school and work skills. Whether it being leadership, management, better team member, or for me personally. This book was truly
Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
The Achievement Habit is a book all about taking control of your life. Bernard Roth is the author and he does a brilliant job of pointing out everyday issues about society. He points out in chapter two that Reasons Are Bullshit . Everyone uses reasons for things that we can control but we only use them when the things are not top priority. If everything we did has top priority then we would get it done and not need an excuse or reason for it. Roth says “ Many reasons are simply excuses to hide the fact that we are not willing to give something high enough priority in our lives.” ( p.41) People may argue that reasons are necessary , Roth argues that Reasons Are Bullshit. He thinks “ The problem with reasons is that they’re
Part one is included the fundamentals and provides the context for people to know what they need to do to become better leaders. In part two, authors discuss the necessary elements of the first fundamental, Believe you can which is about how important it is for leaders to believe in their capacities and have a mindset that leadership can be learned. Chapter three is about second fundamentals, Aspire to excel, which talks about the importance of knowing what is important for leaders and who they are. Chapter four discusses the third fundamental, Challenge yourself which is about how the challenge is critical to learning. Chapter five expresses the fourth fundamental, Engage support, and it points out that leaders who achieve excellence get support along the way. The fifth fundamental, practice deliberately, is the focus of chapter six which it mentions that leaders need to spend time practicing the essential skills for becoming a great leader. In the last chapter, authors summarize the key messages of the book, and they offer leaders to have the commitment to learning (Kouzes & Posner, 2016,
In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, author Sean Covey uses his own experience and provides a somewhat simple approach to help teens build a positive self-image, positive relationships with friends and family, fight back and resist peer pressure, and take control of their lives by achieving their goals. Nearly every review of this book has been exploding with positivity leading it to be called “The Ultimate Teenage Success Guide.” The book also effectively engages the reader with interesting stories and ways to put the techniques into the reader’s life almost immediately.
There are many interesting quotes and advice given in this book; five statements stood out that I felt are worthwhile.
I will use what I have learned from this book in the future by creating more urgency in myself when I know that something needs to be changed. Also, if I ever find myself in a position of leadership, I will be sure that every employee working for me understands why we need the change, supports it, and has a sense of urgency to get it done. Next, it will help me be more careful about my communication, and making sure that everything I do, verbally and nonverbally, should be showing that I am incredibly dedicated to the change that I am trying to introduce. Also, there was a time where we very briefly talked about the importance of change in a business; this book would help in those times wherein changing something proves to be difficult. If you make it appear to yourself and your employees that the change is absolutely needed, then they will all work to accomplish the
Habit 3 is Put First Things First. Personally, I struggled with putting first things first as I was a procrastinator but, I have finally conquered myself and I am no longer in Quadrant 1! You see, there are different time quadrants which tell you if you are a 1. Procrastinator, 2. Prioritizer, 3. Yes-Man and 4. Slacker. You need to always stay on top of things and stay in quadrant 2 but it’s not easy, so you must work very hard for it to become a natural thing for you. Another way to becoming a prioritizer is to realize what your big rocks are and what your small rocks are. In other words, take notice of what is important first and those will be your big rocks to accomplish first. Only then will you have space for all the small rocks. Lastly, don’t let fear control you, control your fear. It’s okay to make mistakes if you’re trying to do the right thing. On page 121 in the 7 Habits book, Sean Covey says “Winning means rising each time you fail.” This is telling you that although you failed, if you are willing to rise and try again and pick up your broken pieces, that is winning. This is a hard habit to conquer but once you do it, it will change your

This was not as easy a read for me. I suppose I am a victim of my generational upbringing, in that, I feel the need to be informed in an entertaining manner. This book has good information, but I had to continually check my focus. Those times when I was truly drawn in were the times when the writer was relating back to a story from his life or others and how it worked in to the particular habit he was teaching at that time. That being said, the following areas are where I believe I can use to make myself and my team better.
Being proactive is the first step in the seven habit journey. I thought I was proactive because I always had to plan everything in my life. Family vacations, work schedules, continuing education all were events that I was proud to say I planned right down to the last detail. Reading the Covey material I realized that being proactive went much deeper than just planning life events. Being proactive involves choosing my attitude, focusing on my circle of influence and not my circle of concern, and turning setbacks into triumphs. Being proactive means to act based on principles not emotions. We all need a pause button that would allow us to stop during that time between...

The assessment quizzes gave me good insight on my leadership skills and skills I need to enhance to become an effective leader. The following is what I have learned doing the assessment quizzes in the book.

I like to refresh my memory on the concepts this book has to offer. Every time I go back and read it again, it always offers new information that I have seemed to look over, so I’m constantly applying that new information that I catch. This is a great book because it actually offers helpful information that you are able to use in your daily life. It provides daily exercises that you are able to do throughout the day to remind yourself to stay on track. “One of the best ways to bring more truth into your life is to conduct a quick self-assessment. The assessment list it provides things such as money & finances, career, habits, daily routines, health, social life and spiritual development.
