Trends from the 1950s to the 1990s Fashion has changed dramatically from the 50s to the 60s. From blouses to bell-bottoms from parachute pants to skinny jeans. Although people have different fashion choices here are the most popular styles throughout the years. Fashion in the 50s and 60s In the 50s dresses, skirts, shorts and pants were worn every day. Women wore pencil skirts, the dresses that they wore were rounded with ballerina length hems. Sheath dresses were popular and they were a form fitting material that showed off natural curves. A lot of dressed were made with jeweled or peter pan collars. Accessorizing in the 50s was all about matching, women added hand bags to their outfits (“1950s Dresses and Fashion”). In the 50s clothes were very cheap, a blouse costed five dollars, and today a cheap blouse costs ten dollars (“Vintage 1950 Fashion Clothes” 2). An elastic waist dress costed only two dollars and seventy cents (1950 Fashion Clothes Part of Our Fifties Fashions Section”). Clothes in the 50s were not very expensive but a fur coat was fifty two dollars which was a lot back then. A tailored coat was thirty six dollars and a sharkskin fabric suit was thirty seven dollars. Only the wealthiest people could afford the silver fox jacket which was one hundred and seventy dollars (“1950 Fashion Clothes Part of Our Fifties Fashions Section”). In the 60s boy’s clothes such as denim jeans, sweaters and jean jackets were between two dollars and eight dollars. Girl’s tunics, button down shirts, sweaters and dresses were between one and twenty dollars. A princess panel dresses and a pleated tent dress was twenty dollars and men’s ties were only fifty cents each (“Vintage 1960s Children Fashion Clothes” 1-3). A men’s suit in the 60s was sixty eight dollars and a seasoned coat was eighty dollars. Girls teased their hair, wore a lot of makeup and wore big hoop earing’s. Women wore skin-tight cotton leggings and off the shoulder tops. Some popular models in the 70s were Cheryl Tiegs who is an American model and fashion designer. Lauren Hutton was a model and went on magazine covers from the 60s to the 70s, she is also an actress. Janice Dickinson moved to New York City to pursue her modeling career after winning “Miss High Fashion Model” (Valenti, Lauren). Brooke Shields was a model in the 80s and was on the covers of the most popular fashion magazines, she also appeared in Calvin Klein’s jean ads. Christine Brinkley didn’t was to be a supermodel at first but once she became one, she covered sports illustrated swimsuit magazine.
